In memory of

Elsie R. Mortensen

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 77

Elsie Rae Crown was born February 20, 1930, north of Wall, the daughter of Orrin and Maggie (Wetzel) Crown. She attended school at Wall High School. After high school she was united in marriage to Harold Marvin Mortensen on May 3, 1950. She was employed at Golden West Telephone Company, USDA District Soil Conservation Office, Wall Lanes, and Wall and Philip Livestock Auction. She was the business manager of Wall High School for 16 years and the bookkeeper for Crown Oil for 55 years.

Elsie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wall where she was a greeter and member of the altar guild, as well as a member of the Mended Hearts Association.

Elsie enjoyed spending time visiting with friends during coffee at Wall Drug. If you couldn’t find her at home or Wall Drug, she was either playing cards or dominos with friends. Elsie was very well known and always found a friend wherever she went. Her religion was very important to her. She was excited about spending eternity with God, Harold, Merle and the rest of her family in Heaven.

Survivors include two sons Clark Mortensen and his wife Audrey of Wall, and Roger Mortensen and his wife Shirley of Gillette, Wyoming; one daughter Gloria Whetstone and her husband Wade of Gillette; five grandchildren Sommerlyn Naescher and her husband Gary of Gillette, Sheila Mortensen of Spearfish, Randy Mortensen of Gillette, Holly Hofer and her husband Mike of Gillette, and Michael Whetstone of Gillette; two great-grandchildren Landon Hofer and Malaya Naescher, both of Gillette; two sisters Doris Sebade and her husband Norman of Tacoma, Washington, and Deloris "Dobbie" Foster of Wall; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Harold M. Mortensen on March 4, 1966; her parents; and three brothers Wayne, Ivan, and Merle Crown.

  • I am so fortunate that I was able to be so close to Grandma. She did an amazing job with her kids and us Grandkids couldn't have asked for a better grandma. She always taught us how important family is. She would do anything for us! We have so many wonderful memories of her. Even when I moved to Spearfish, I would come home and still get carrot cake or chili from her, or once in a while I would receive those calls to meet her in Deadwood to work on my Black Jack Skills.
I was able to see Grandma the night (Wednesday) before she passed away. She was up and moving and seemed perfectly fine. She was telling me how she was worried that she couldn't go Christmas shopping this year and that she would have to send mom and dad to buy the presents. We laughed about a pumpkin pie she was suppose to bring to the hospital and just joked back and forth. She didn't even seem like anything was wrong.
Grandma is really the only Grandma I have ever known and I feel so lucky that I was able to spend the time I did with her and have her supporting me at all kinds of acitivites from all my basketball games to band concerts to graduations. We all love her and will miss her.

  • Clark and family,
So sorry to hear about your Mom. I knew she was having surgery when I called and found out you were out of the office. This must be a shock to you and your family. God's time is not always in line with what we think our time should be here on earth. We need to remember, we are here for a short time. Your Mom has just begun her eternity with her Lord and Savior. Her pain and suffering is over. Our prayers are with you and your family. God comforts us during our time in the valley. Remember the good times and the special times with your Mom. • Dear family & friends of Elsie -

As a person working in the medical field - I have met so many people over the course of the past 20 years. Elsie, although no longer a patient in the clinic where I work, is someone whom I have never forgotten.

When I came to Wall to assist one of the doctors doing an outreach clinic, it was Elsie who was the first to greet us and welcome us there. Whenever we returned to Wall, we always knew that there would be lunch and wonderful home-made PIE for us after we were finished!

And when she came to visit the doctor in Rapid City, she never came without a fresh bag of donuts from Wall Drug!

Always thinking of others, she has always been a joy to be with and will remain held forever, dear to my heart and in fond memory.

    Blessings to you all -
