Marie Denke

of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Creighton, South Dakota, died on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood at the age of 87

Marie H. Hamann was born October 21, 1925, at Creighton, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Christina (Sieler) Hamann. She attended high school in Hill City and graduated from Black Hills School of Business in Rapid City.
Marie was united in marriage to Helmuth H. Denke on November 9, 1946. The couple lived on a farm-ranch 10 miles north of Creighton, South Dakota, where they raised six children. In 1994, due to health reasons, Helmuth retired and moved to Wall where they remained until moving to an assisted living facility in Rapid City in 2003.
Her husband Helmuth preceded her in death on March 9, 2004. Marie continued to reside in Rapid City until moving into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood in August 2009.
Marie was a member of the Creighton Bees Extension Club and active in 4-H when her children were home. She also worked several years as a secretary and billing clerk for Hubbard Milling Company in Wall. Following retirement, she and her husband Helmuth enjoyed many winters in Arizona and they were members of the Good Sam RV Club. Marie took up oil painting in her later years and became quite an artist. She won several awards with her paintings in local contests.
Survivors include three sons David Denke and his wife June of Casper, Wyoming, Charles Denke and his wife Donna of Thornton, Colorado, and Russell Denke of Chamberlain; three daughters Marcia Huether and her husband Wayne of Interior, Kathy Kidd and her husband Jack Weber of Thornton, Colorado, and Julie Kasier and her husband Larry of Rapid City; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Florence Smith of Torrington, Wyoming; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Helmuth on March 9, 2004; and her parents.
Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 13, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, with Pastor Curtis Garland officiating.
Interment was at the Wall Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

The Denke Family ~ Please know all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Marie was always very special to us. We have many happy memories of our trips to Wall to visit your parents at the farm and at their home in Wall. Of course we always had to have morning coffee at Wall Drug. May you all find comfort in each other, and the loving support of family and friends, near and far.

I remember many times I sat at your mom's table doing homework with Julie (both in town & out at the ranch) & your mom trying to teach me Algebra...it never worked but I had so much fun!!! She also helped me alot when my oldest son was born...we spent many days over there when he was just a tiny little fella! And the meals...well...we all know they were delicious!!! She will ALWAYS hold a very dear & special place in my heart. Thank you so much for giving me the honor of singing at her service...it means a lot to me. She was a sweet & very special woman who will be missed by all who knew & loved her. Keep your memories close to your heart...they're something even time can't take away.
