In memory of

Shirley K. Burns

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 87

Shirley K. Doud was born February 7, 1916, in Hubbard, Iowa, the daughter of William Herbert and Nellie (Reece) Doud. After her mother married Glen Bever, the family moved to Agar, South Dakota. Shirley grew up and received her education in Agar, graduating from Agar High School in May 1933.

Following graduation she enrolled in a three-year nurse’s training course at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Pierre, where she acquired her Registered Nurse degree.

She then worked as an interim county health nurse in Meade County.

Shirley was united in marriage to Donald Paul Burns November 6, 1937 at Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

In 1938, they made their home in Philip where they started their new car franchise.

Shirley assisted the doctor as a nurse traveling to homes in the rural community.

In 1960, they established the Thunderbird Motel and Trailer Court.

On May 14, 1968 her husband Donald preceded her in death.

Shirley continued to operate the car dealership and their motel for a couple years before selling the dealership, motel and trailer park.

When the Philip Nursing Home opened July 1, 1970, Shirley began working under Sarah Flesner. In 1974 she became Director of Nursing, a position she held until 1980. She worked part time after that and worked her last day as charge nurse on her 80th birthday.

Shirley was a member of the United Church, the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Grateful for having shared her life include two sons Don Burns and his wife Kerry of Philip, and Richard Burns and his wife Sheila of Fargo, North Dakota; two daughters Sheryl Michael and her husband Gene of Philip, and Kayleen Anderson and her husband James of Pierre; sixteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one step-sister Lucille VonWald of Gettysburg, South Dakota; one brother-in-law Willard Burns of Rapid City; three sisters-in-law Virginia Burns and Jean Burns of Philip, and Mary Martha Burns of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

  • Since the first day I started working at Philip Health Services, I have heard what a terrific nurse Shirley was. Anyone who has worked with Shirley has told me what a high standard she set and that if you worked with her, you were working with the best. I have been told more than once that "You learned the right way to do things if you learned from Shirley." I know many of the employees there will miss her. She makes me proud to be a nurse.
    My deepest sympathies.

  • Sorry about your loss, she was a wonderful person, friend and nurse. She taught me a lot the years I worked with Shirley at the Nursing Home. She always thought about the resident first and always had their best interest in mind. ~ Ed & Karen Snyder PO Box 653 Philip, SD 57567 (8/14/2003)
