Harvey Jacob Madsen was born in Pierre on February 22, 1905 to C. Kruse and Carrie (Fugelsang) Madsen.
Harvey attended rural schools before attending school in Midland. His father was a brand inspector in numerous cities such as Chicago where Harvey attended White Sox games at Comiskey Park, which was located next to the stockyards and thus he became an avid fan. They also lived in Sioux City, Iowa for two years where Harvey attended Morning Side High School during his freshman and sophomore years before coming back to Midland and graduating from Midland high School in 1923. He attended Huron College and Mankato Business College in Mankato Minnesota. While attending Huron College he played baseball for the National Guard and was dubbed the "Home Run King" of the team.
Harvey and his wife Pearl (Illian) of 73years were married on January 29, 1927 in Ft. Pierre and lived in Midland, Capa, and on the Madsen Ranch their entire lives. Their only child Janice and her family also live on the Madsen Ranch.
Harvey was a member of the Open Bible Church and earlier the Trinity Lutheran Church where he spent many years as Sunday School superintendent. He also was a very active member of the Gideons Organization.
He served as a board member at the First National Bank in Philip for 50 years – the longest anyone has ever served.
Harvey loved sports and still attended his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s ball games, tumbling, gymnastics, and school activities. He also loved to fish and golf along with being an avid gardener. He took great pride in his garden produce and numerous varieties of roses.
Harvey was a wonderful person who took great pride in his family and also the Madsen Ranch, these were his greatest loves.

Bierle and Kory Bierle and his wife Robin, all of Midland; three great-grandchildren Kruse, Sage and Bailey Bierle; a sister Elsie Madsen Haddock of Rapid City; two nephews Jim Haddock of Rapid City, and Robert Patrick Haddock and his wife Sheila and their children Molly and Alex, of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other nieces and nephews on Pearl’s side of the family, many of whom worked with Harvey on the ranch.
