In memory of

Hazel B. Mittet

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, March 23, 1997 at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 100

Hazel B. Jones was born April 18, 1896, at Pierre, South Dakota, the daughter of Thomas and Clara Ann (Asman) Jones.

She grew up on the Jones homestead on Brave Bull Creek, located about seven miles southeast of Midland.  She received her education in that area and after graudting from high school she graduated from Huron College at Huron, South Dakota.

As a young lady she moved to Minneapolis where she was trained by the Red Cross in surgical dressing work and then moved back to Midland where she supervised the making of the dressings in the Midland area.

Hazel taught school at Murdo High School and two years in the Midland High School.  She then worked as a student assistant at the Huron College Library and after a summer in library work she was back at the college as assistant librarian.

Hazel was united in marriage to Martin Mittet on March 6, 1929, at Tacoma, Washington.

They made their home on the West Coast until 1933 when they moved to the Kansas City area.  Due to Martin's failing health the couple moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, in September of 1972 to be near her brother, Ralph Jones, and his family.

Martin preceded her in death on December 24, 1974, at Rapid City.

Hazel continued to reside in Rapid City until health reasons forced her to move into the Philip Nursing Home in September of 1994, where she has since resided.

Hazel was very active in the Methodist Church in Kansas City and Rapid City at the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church.  She was very involved in making bibs, blankets, and lap robes with the Church Women United for charitable donations.

She was the first president of the Pioneer Club of Western South Dakota, which was organized on August 15, 1956, and she served as historian from 1968 until 1990.

Hazel was a member of the Midland Chapter #139, Order of the Eastern Star, and she received her 50 year pin in 1978.  In 1982, the Midland Chapter joined with Philip to become Chapter #100, Order of the Eastern Star.

Grateful for having shared her life are her four nephews and their spouses, Thomas B. and Mary Jones; Ralph D. "Shorty" and Maxine Jones; Jerry P. and Joyce Jones; and Morris W. and Barbara Jones, all of Midland; three nieces, Lucille Bormann of Huron; Hazel Boyd and her husband, Robert, of Grass Valley, California; and Norma Mittet of Grants Pass, Oregon; several great-nephews and nieces; and several great-great nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, Martin Mittet, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Esther Mae Jones; a brother, Ralph Jones; a nephew, James Jones; and a great-nephew, Casey Gaylord Jones.

A memorial is established.
