In memory of

Selma W. Holcomb

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, June 14, 1991 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 91

Selma W. Wolach was born November 3, 1899, on a farm near Lesterville, South Dakota, to Adam and Hattie Wolach.

She grew up in the Lesterville area where she received her education.  She then attended Southern Normal at Springfield, South Dakota, where she obtained her teaching certificate.

In 1926 she moved to Washabaugh County where she taught rural school.

Selma was united in marriage to Daniel J. Holcomb on July 31, 1928, at Yankton, South Dakota.  They lived on a farm east of Longvalley until moving into Longvalley in 1937.

She taught rural school in Washabaugh, Mellette, and Bennett counties.  From 1941 until 1945 she was Superintendent of Schools in Washabaugh County.

In 1948 she became postmaster of Longvalley, a position she held until retiring in 1969.  They also operated the Holcomb Grocery Store in Longvalley from 1937 until 1969.

They continued to operate their farm east of Longvalley all their married life and after retirement in 1969 they moved back onto the farm where they continued to reside.

Her husband, Daniel, preceded her in death on March 30, 1983.

She continued to live on the farm until health reasons forced her into the Kadoka Care Center in April of 1988.

Selma was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church of Kadoka, the American Legion Auxiliary of Martin, and the National Postmasters Association.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Robert and his wife, Wanda Holcomb, of Longvalley; one grandson, Jeffrey Holcomb of Pierre; one granddaughter, Janice (Mrs. Dean) Fitzgerald of Philip; four great-grandchildren, Andy, Beth, Amanda, and Abby, all of Philip; two sisters, Helen Barta of Tyndall, South Dakota, and Bertha Morgan of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Daniel, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
