In memory of

Delores Peters

of Okaton, South Dakota, died on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 81

Delores Nadine (Canney) Peters was given life by her Creator and was born in Chamberlain, SD, on April 1, 1936, to Frank Hale and Mildred Beatrice (Darling) Canney and was a baptized child of God.

Until age nine she grew up on various farms throughout South Dakota—south of Midland, south of Stamford, north of Okaton, and east of Rapid City. She lived the remainder of her childhood and teenage years on the Tri-State Mill grounds in Rapid City. Her childhood was spent attending country school and church, visiting near-by family, and playing with farm animals. “Helping” her dad was among her happiest memories. She remembered sawing wood, cutting ice, and hauling hay with him.

Because the early 40’s were already lean years in South Dakota, she felt no undo effects from the gas ration stamps and food ration books for coffee, sugar, and meat that she remembered. She also reminisced about “black outs,” when no lights were allowed on certain nights for certain hours. Happier memories were those of time spent playing with and caring for her new baby sister, Vinetta Darline, her pride and joy. The 1950’s brought Polio and with it physical therapy, recovery, and a missed senior year. The 1960’s brought college, working in the lab at the Tri-State Milling Company, and teaching at country schools in Nebraska and Wyoming.

Eventually, she moved to the Creighton and Kadoka areas to teach, where she became friends with Karel Reiman, a fellow teacher. Karel and Lloyd introduced her to LaVern Peters, to whom she was united in holy marriage on June 8, 1969, and with whom she was granted 41 years of married life. She raised three children, Heidi, Jim, and Jerry, grew a large garden, tended chickens, and worked the family farm and ranch alongside her husband. After all three kids were in school, she completed her teaching degree and taught third graders full time in Murdo for the next 22 years.

Upon her “retirement,” she continued to work the family farm and ranch but found time for growing flowers, quilting, and crocheting. She enjoyed attending her grandson Samuel’s concerts and visiting with her church and school friends.

On October 6, 2017, Delores Nadine (Canney) Peters fell asleep in Jesus. She is survived by her daughter, Heidi (Matt) Fredericksen of St. Peters, MO; two sons, Jim Peters of Okaton, SD and Jerry (Courtney) Peters of Badger, MN; her grandson, Samuel Fredericksen; her sister Vinetta; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her beloved dog Obie.

She was preceded in death by her husband LaVern and by her parents and grandparents.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. CDT on Monday, October 9 at St. Peter Lutheran Church south of Midland.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, October 10 at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Midland.

Interment will be at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery.
