In memory of

Cheryl J. Baker

of Aberdeen, South Dakota, died on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Prairie Heights Healthcare in Aberdeen at the age of 88

Cheryl Joan Lewison was born June 8, 1934, at Philip, South Dakota to Orville and Golda (Eslick) Lewison. She received her education in Philip, was a housekeeper at the Senechal (then Hotel, later Apartments), and graduated in 1953. After marriage, she worked at various places around the Grindstone and Philip communities.

Cheryl was united in marriage to Clell Baker on November 28, 1953, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, where she had been baptized and confirmed years before. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Aberdeen, sang in the choir and performed light housekeeping duties. She was very active in church and duties wherever she lived. Cheryl has resided in or near South Dakota towns of Philip, Milesville, Pierre, Lebanon, Stratford, Warner, Aberdeen; Kimball, Nebraska; Faribault and Owatonna, Minnesota.
Cheryl worked at the former Dakota Midland Hospital as a housekeeper, worked at the former Mother’s Café and the Airport Café in Aberdeen, baking pastry desserts. She was a helper at the Aberdeen Salvation Army, and a Foster Grandparent for a daycare center. In 2002, she returned to Philip to live with, and care for, her mother, and became a member of the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, and rejoined the First Lutheran Church. She later became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Pierre, and was a member of the Aberdeen SDA congregation until her death.

Cheryl enjoyed travelling and took trips to Colorado Springs, CO, Juarez, Mexico, Los Cruces, NM, went on an Alaskan cruise to see whales; visited Branson, Missouri; visited Dover, NJ, Manhattan and Valley Stream, NY, and many other wonderful places. She loved antiques, baking, cooking, sewing and embroidery. She also enjoyed being around people and caring for them. She helped her children and grandchildren in any way she could.

Survivors include daughters Karen (Gary) Maier of Aberdeen and Jennifer (George) Matty of Metter, GA; five grandchildren: Pamela Mettler, Robert Maier, Crystal Wolter, Jonathan Maier, and Christopher Matty; three brothers Larry (Suzanne) Lewison of Sioux Falls, Arnold (Evelyn) Lewison of Kimball, NE, and Tony Lewison of Scottsbluff, NE; various cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her husband, Clell; her parents; two sisters - Bonita (Jack) Poss and Jacqueline (Ned) Thorson.
