In memory of

Marjorie M. Swift

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 95

Marjorie M. Swift, age 95, of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Marjorie Marie Swift was born on a farm southeast of Lucas, South Dakota on January 29, 1924. She was one of nine children born to Charles and Olive (Fish) Johnson. She grew up the family farm with her siblings and attended Lucas Country School. She graduated from Lucas High School in 1942. This was the last year the high school remained open. She earned her teaching certificate from Springfield College and then taught in rural areas.

Marjorie married her high school sweetheart, Calvin Swift, on October 23, 1945. They made their home and farmed for ten years in the Lucas community where their four children were born; Sandra, Richard, Larry, and Thomas. They later moved to a ranch northwest of Philip.

Marjorie joined the First Presbyterian Church. While raising her four children she would substitute teach and clean houses. She was elected to be Register of Deeds in 1982 and she retired in December of 1990.

Marjorie enjoyed gardening, which she still did until the age of 90. She was very crafty from sewing to leather work. She sewed many blankets and sweaters. She also made belts and billfolds for family, friends and the community. She especially loved spending time with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Larry Swift of Philip; son, Thomas and his wife Val of Philip; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sister, Luella Frey of Moscow, Idaho; brother, George Johnson of Gregory, South Dakota; her special friend, Alice Brooks; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Marjorie was proceeded in death by her husband of nearly 62 years, Calvin Swift; son, Richard Swift; daughter, Sandra Bockman; grandson, Jesse Swift; her parents; daughter-in-law, Vivian Swift; four brothers, Almond, Leslie, Harold and Robert; and two sisters, Millie Osnes and Irene Pine.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at the United Church in Philip with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.

Interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

  • Just heard about Marjorie's passing. She was a great person to know. Had a lot of nice visits with her through the past years. I would go to the Register of Deeds office when she was in office to get info for my job with PCA and she took dang good care of the books. She was very protective of all paperwork!!., She was so proud of her family and talked about them a lot when we would run into each other. What a smile we will be missing. Hugs to all her family.
