In memory of

Fern Konst

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 91

Fern Lorraine Konst was born December 18, 1928 to William E. Lee and Electa Pearl Johnson Caster Lee of Ottumwa, South Dakota. Fern attended country school in Ottumwa starting at the age four and graduated 8th grade at age 13. She shared many fond memories of her friendships during these years.

In 1946 she was united in marriage to John L. Konst of Midland and began her life moving into an old grainery where they started a family. They purchased their place in 1948 in Ottumwa and enjoyed many years of ranching, farming, and raising their family. The family moved to the Henry Konst (John’s Dad) place in Midland in 1966. In 1970 Fern moved to Philip full-time. She acquired rental properties, worked different jobs but her favorite occupation was childcare. She diapered most of the bottoms in Philip. Everyone knew her as “Grandma Fern”. She always kept busy with hobbies and projects and especially remembered for her afghans.

Survivors include five sons: Leonard Konst of Rapid City; David (Kathy Thomas) Konst of Rapid City; Thomas Konst of Philip; Rodney (Sherri) Konst of Roanoke, Virginia; and Jeffrey (Lori) Konst of Ft. Pierre; two daughters: Edith (Keith) Slovek of Philip and Kristie (Mike) Bradley of Whitewood; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Connie Lee; a niece-in-law Joann VanTassel; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents William and Electa “Pearl” Lee; daughter Esther Burns; son Richard Konst; great-grandson Branden Morris; brother William "Bill" Lee; half-brother Grover Caster; two half-sisters Ruth Blumenthal and Edna Jones; and nephew Junior VanTassel.

A come and go viewing will be held on Friday, September 25 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip. The family asks that anyone who attends follow CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19.

The graveside service will be live-streamed from this web page on the day of the service.
