Gary R. Yocum passed away in his sleep on November 29th, 2017. He was born on January 3, 1941, to Ray R. Yocum and Alice (Countryman) Yocum in Topeka, Kansas. He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Emporia State University in Kansas with a degree in Accounting and Economics. While in college he was united in marriage to Judith (Cooke), and they had two daughters, Deb and Cheryl.

After graduation in 1963 he went to work in Kansas City at the CPA firm Touche, Ross, Bailey and Niven for eight years. In 1970 he transferred to Omaha, Nebraska to help start the new office of what by then was known as Touche, Ross. For 26 years he worked as the auditor of many large international companies. He also served as Treasurer of Goodwill Industries of Omaha and was awarded the 1998 Distinguished Service to the Profession by the Nebraska Society of Certified Public Accountants.

In 1996 Gary retired and moved to a ranch northwest of Wall, South Dakota. He served on the boards of Wall Clinic for many years, South Dakota Ag Ventures, and Genesis Equity Fund. He was also a member of Eastern Pennington County Investment Club. He enjoyed life on the SD ranch, working with his horses, helping with the Kjerstads’ cattle operation and all the friends he made in the community. He became a very accomplished woodworker and enjoyed making items for others. In 2004 he suffered a ruptured aorta which led to the decline in his health.

Survivors include his wife Judy of 57 years; two daughters, Debra Yocum of Topeka, Kansas, and Cheryl Yocum of Dana Point, California; a brother, Kenneth (Jane) Yocum of Melvern, Kansas; all the descendants of Elnoris and Ila Kjerstad who were truly family; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, December 1, at the Rush Funeral Home in Wall.

  • Judy- Just received the email and our hearts sank! We have often said- this year we will go through South Dakota on our way to Jackson Hole. Then life overtakes us and we head out the interstate , the fastest way to reach our bit of heaven. There are so many memories and good times with Gary and the Touche family . It was a magic moment in a career and I am so glad their were Partners and friends like Gary to help new partners get their feet on the ground and be the type of professional he was. We all have moved into the "next" stages" of our lives doing those things our hearts tell us to do and that our heads enabled through the years we buildt a successful practice. Miss seeing you and we might just make that "detour" trip one of these days.
All our Love, Richard and Karen

  • Dear Judy, We were able to view Gary's Wonderful Video while his service was taking place. We laughed and cried while we watched it. It was a Celebration of his Life. We have been sharing memories of Gary and you and how important you have been in our lives. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you and all the family. He will be Greatly Missed. Love, Ben and Martha ~ Ben and Martha Simmons Fort Myers, FL (12/3/2017)
  • Those who have given of themselves to others, will live forever in each heart they have touched. Enjoyed working with Gary while on the clinic board. The wooden cabinet he made for our files was very much appreciated. May God comfort you Judy and your girls. ~ Ester & Gene Wall (12/1/2017)
