In memory of

Helen Marie Franks

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 88

Helen M. Omdahl was born January 19, 1928, in Cottonwood, South Dakota, the 6th of 10 children born to Mandus and Sylvia (Scotvold) Omdahl. She grew up in Cottonwood where she received her elementary education. She then attended Kadoka High School, graduating in 1947. She then attended Black Hills Teacher’s College in Spearfish before teaching in rural schools in the area.

After a few years of teaching, she went back to nursing school. She then worked as a nurse in different hospitals, including the Philip Hospital. In the early 80’s she spent her winters in Sun City, Arizona, and the summers in Philip.

While in Sun City, she met her neighbor, H. Randall Franks. They were united in marriage on June 25, 1991, in Miami, Oklahoma. After their marriage, they made their home in Garden City, Missouri and later Sun City, Arizona, where Randy worked as a mechanical engineer at Luke Air Force Base.

They moved back to Philip in July of 2015, where they have since resided.

Just like the rest of the Omdahl family, Helen enjoyed playing bingo and all sorts of card games.

Survivors include her husband Randy Franks of Philip; one sister Florence Dean of Philip; one brother Vern Omdahl and his wife Carol of Cottonwood; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann McDaniel of Harrisonville, Missouri, and Wanda McDonald of Blue Springs, Missouri, and her two sons, Duane McDonald of Kansas City, Missouri, and Marlin McDonald of Prairie Village, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings, Oliver Omdahl, Mabel Brunner, Grace O’Dea, Tom Omdahl, Nellie O’Dea, Esther Buhring, and Lucille Omdahl in infancy.

Visitation will be held two hours preceding the services at the church.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Lauren Ley officiating.

Interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
