In memory of

Lowell R. "Butch" Iversen

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Avantara Nursing Home in Pierre at the age of 84

Lowell Richard “Butch” Iversen was born June 19, 1935, at his grandmother’s house in Murdo, South Dakota, to Loren Henry “Buster” and Margaret Ann (Thorn) Iversen. He passed away according to his wishes on July 17, 2019.

Butch lived his entire life in Murdo and while he had opportunities to move, he choose to stay close to his roots. He was a simple man of many talents! Feast or famine he loved working the land and with cattle. His favorite horses were Red and Kidd. He was taught at an early age, to put it mildly, to “cut” calves and did so for many ranchers for over 40 years: that is a lot of steers! Besides farming and ranching, throughout his life, just to mention a few, he was a plumber, semitruck driver, crane operator and dam builder. Butch was the “go to guy” for many: you needed something moved, unstuck, fixed or rounded up he was your guy. He was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast (worn out many thesaurus). He enjoyed playing cards, would shoot an occasional game of pool and let’s not forget he liked a cold beer. One of his nieces described him this way: “He was big and loud and rough, but behind all that he was smart, sweet, funny and real”. And he could laugh, it was infectious. He rarely forgot a name or the face that went with it.

Those having the privilege of being a participant in his life are his wife of 66 years Nancy Jean “Tootie” (Jackson) Iversen. His son Jeffrey Lowell (Nancy) Iversen, Denver, CO. His daughter Christine Susan Strait, Mesa, AZ. Grandchildren Marcus Hunter (Lisa) Iversen, Denver, CO. Jonathan Carroll (Ginnie) Strait, Mesa, AZ. Shelby Charlotte Strait, Mesa, AZ. One great grandson William James Strait, Mesa, AZ. His siblings: Loren Wayne “Skip” (Rose) Iversen, Chamberlain, SD. Gloria Ann Neary, Noblesville, IN, Curtis Ole “Toby” (Yvetta) Iversen, Wickenburg, AZ, Wesley Michael “Ike” Iversen (deceased) and Monica Star Iversen, Mitchell, SD. Too many nieces and nephews to mention by name but you know who you are, a host of cousins (happens when your father was one of nine, your mother was one of six).

He was proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents Ole and Emma Iversen, maternal grandparents Springate and Louise Thorn, his parents and brother Ike; cousins, aunts and uncles.

He did not want a memorial service and thought flowers at a funeral were the dumbest thing ever so honor him by drinking a Coors Light, laughing until it hurts, being kind to one another and when a neighbor asks for help; help them.

Instead of cards, flowers, or any monetary donations to the family; the family requests donations in Butch's name be made to the Jones County Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 305, Murdo, SD 57559.
