In memory of

Samuel "Sam" Neumann

of Philip formerly of Cottonwood, South Dakota, died on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre at the age of 80

Samuel Carl Neumann was born July 27, 1938, on his parents’ farm/ranch located eleven miles south of Cottonwood, the son of Carl William and Maude (Redman) Neumann. Sam attended rural school until the 3rd grade and was home schooled after that. As a young man he stayed on the farm/ranch with his parents and his brother, Ernest.

Sam was united in marriage to Gail E. Flatt on December 15, 1973. After their marriage they resided on the Neumann Ranch. During that time, he and his brother and their wives operated a dairy for over 50 years, which was one of the first dairies to have computerized machinery in the United States. They also raised wheat and cattle.

In 2000 Sam and Gail retired and moved to Philip. Even though he was in town he stayed involved with the ranch. Sam would often drive out to help with work at the ranch and also bringing parts and supplies.

Sam enjoyed any activity that got him outdoors, from hunting and fishing to rock hunting. He especially loved spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Gail of Pierre; two sons, John (Tabatha Swartz) Neumann of Cottonwood and Bill Neumann of Pierre; daughter, Cindy Bechard of Pierre; seven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Mickey, his parents and his brother Ernest “Ernie” Neumann.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, at Rush Funeral Home in Philip with Ken Toews officiating.
