of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 88
Clarence D. “Wib” Osborn was born March 23, 1932 at Philip, South Dakota to Eleanor Angela Osborn (nee Welfl) and Wilbur Osborn. He grew up at various rural locations around Jackson county in a family of farmers/ranchers. Wib attended the public schools in the county, graduating from Belvidere High School in 1952.
Before entering the Army, he worked in road construction and as a mechanic. Wib served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, with nearly two years as an MP during the Korean Conflict. Other than his time in the military Wib was a life-long resident of Jackson county.
Wib was united in marriage to Lynn Pier in 1959 and later divorced in 1973. For many years Wib and his incredibly special friend, Dolores Thomas (Orelup), enjoyed each other’s company until Delores died in 2004.
Wib studied business at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. After he completed that higher education, his career included banking and retail. Wib worked as a loan officer at the Belvidere State Bank for many years. He later co-owned and ran Kadoka Sundries with Dolores Thomas for numerous years. From 1997-2012 during his “retirement," he was active with the Kadoka Ambulance Service, having logged tens of thousands of miles behind the wheel in all kinds of weather and at many hours, day and night. He also kept the ambulances in smooth running order for many years. His additional civic contributions included serving on the Kadoka City Council, volunteering at the sports center, fixing things, and mowing lawns for citizens unable to do things for themselves. Wib was named BankWest “senior celebrity” in August 2000.
He was “Grandpa Wib” to many Kadoka kids, especially the Stilwell trio. In his later years he often could be seen on his riding lawn mower around town or fixing mowers with some of the kids. We trust that Wib’s many talents will be welcomed in the hereafter as he rides off into the sunset on his mower.
Survivors include son Eric Osborn of Belvidere; daughter Erin (Robert) Van Norman of Mesilla, New Mexico; two brothers Francis "Tojo" (Sharon) Osborn of Streeter, North Dakota and Louis (Marcia) Osborn of Rapid City; two sisters Kay (Troy) Dent of Shalimar, Florida and Jean (Eddie) Ehrmantraut of Wadena, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews who live in South Dakota and elsewhere around the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law Troy and Eddie; and sister-in-law Sharon.
