Ted Vobr

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Saturday, March 21, 2020
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 83

Theodore Robert Vobr, better known as “Ted” by his family and friends, was born on April 13, 1936 to Albert and Kathryn (Zastrow) Vobr on the family home place in Tripp County which is thirteen miles south of Winner, South Dakota. He was delivered by a mid-wife. In 1948, the family moved to a ranch in the northwest corner of Mellette County. In 1952 they moved about ten miles north to a ranch near Stamford, South Dakota. Ted attended school through the sixth grade in Tripp County and then attended Big White and Harmony schools in Mellette County.

Starting in 1953, Ted worked for various ranchers in Jackson County including: Bert Perault, Andy Blom, and Martin and Baxter. In 1956, he started working for Oliver Iwan in Mellette County. At first, he lived with Oliver and Stella Iwan. When Oliver bought another ranch in Jackson County, Ted moved there in the fall of 1964. This is the same ranch where Ted had worked for Martin and Baxter. He continued to live and work for the rest of his life on that ranch.

From 1960 to 1962, Ted served in the United States Army including such places as: Ft. Riley, Ft. Leonard Wood, and West Point. At West Point Ted was a mechanic and served in the motor pool and drove cadets wherever they needed to go. One day he was sent to drive Billy Graham around, and he got to visit with him quite a bit. He was at West Point for a year and a half. Ted was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed farming and ranching. He liked to fish, hunt, and ride around on his four-wheeler. He also enjoyed playing cards and doing puzzles. Ted was a member of the American Legion of Belvidere. He helped with Memorial Day services and was active in mowing and maintaining the Belvidere Cemetery.

Ted never married. Survivors include eight siblings Margaret Adel of Rapid City, Albert "Al" (Ardith) Vobr of Springview, Nebraska, Helen Anderson of Bagley, Minnesota, Jo (Jim) Goldade of Bismarck, North Dakota, Frances Vobr of Bismarck, North Dakota, David Vobr of Lakewood, Colorado, Lawrence "Larry" (Loretta) Vobr of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and Philip (Nan) Vobr of Shevlin, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Judi Vobr; special friends Syd Iwan and Jim Addison; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ted was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vobr; his parents; and two brothers-in-law.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at the Belvidere Cemetery with Pastor Jesse Taylor officiating.

My dad and Ted were active members of the Belvidere Legion. For many years, they both participated in the color guard/firing squad at the cemetery on Memorial Day. All decked out with their service uniforms made a big impression on everyone! People looked forward to this. What a great example of patriotism! I looked up to him/nice guy! Remembering Ted with good thoughts.

Ted was a great friend of the Freeman family, we played many games of cards and played pool a lot, may have been a few Schlitz beers involved too. He had many meals and visits at our house, I remember he and my mom loved to put together picture puzzles. He was a great friend, always kind and fun, a wonderful gentleman. RIP dear friend.

I am a member of the railroad mowing crew. Somehow most summers Ted would spot us mowing west on the rail and meet us a the railroad crossing south of the 1880 town. Most times he also had his friend, a big ol dog with him. The crew would visit with him before moving on. Ted will be missed by all. Our heart felt condolences go out to the Vobr family as well as the Iwan's.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Ted. We spent many happy hours visiting with Mr. Ted each summer, camping behind his house, grilling burgers, shooting prairie dogs, and talking for hours in the evening. He was a fine man and our very good friend. We will miss him.
