Harold Schnee

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 5, 2012
at the Kadoka Nursing Home in Kadoka at the age of 95

Harold Glen Schnee was born April 7, 1917 at Kadoka, South Dakota, to Robert Henry and Maggie (Illingworth) Schnee. He grew up in the Kadoka area and attended rural school prior to graduating from Kadoka High School in 1935.
Harold farmed and ranched with his father until entering the U.S. Army in July 1942. After basic training, he was sent to Camp Hale, Colorado, where he was attached to the 680th Medical Collecting Co: a medical team who cared for the wounded in the field. This unit was attached to the 87th Infantry and was sent to Kiska in the Aleutian Islands. After their needs were met there, they were sent back to the U.S. and joined the 10th Mts. Division, ski troops and 4-5000 head of horses and mules who were all sent to the northern mountains in Italy. The mules were used in the mountains in place of heavy equipment.
After his discharge he returned to the Kadoka area where he owned and operated a dairy business for thirty-six years. Harold furnished dairy cows for achievement days and for 4-H young people for many years. During this time he was a member of the State Dairy Commission under Governor Kneip. In 1980, he sold the dairy business and went into the sheep business for many years. He was one of the first volunteers to deliver Meals On Wheels to people around Kadoka. He was an avid motorcyclist for over 30 years.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Burton on August 19, 1967 at Cheyenne, Wyoming. They made their home on the Schnee farm all their married life.
Harold was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon for many years. He was a driving enthusiast of horses and mules and helped promote many wagon trains. He was a member of the Kadoka School Board for over 25 years, serving as president for a number of years, and served on many dairy and sheep activities over the years. Harold was also a member of the American Legion Post #27 of Kadoka.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Mary Schnee of Kadoka; one son Clinton Schnee and his wife Darlene of Kadoka; two daughters Carol LaBau and her husband Doyle of Rapid City and Caron Mielke and her husband Rick of Piedmont; a step-son Steve Burton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one step-daughter Teresa Smith and her husband Rob of Little Rock, Arkansas; four grand-children Ted Schnee of Kadoka, Angela McKeehan of Kadoka, Erika Mielke of Piedmont, and Mikala Mielke of Rapid City; three step-grandchildren, Nate Smith and Jacob Smith of Nashville, Tennessee, and Cole Burton of Colorado Springs, CO; five great-grandchildren Aubrey Schnee of Kadoka, and Ana, Molly, Kate and Max McKeehan of Kadoka; two step-great-grandchildren Riley and T.J. It is very hard to think of Harold not being here. He was definitely a man of God. As I was growing up with Caron in the "milking cow days" he was always my hero and was always so kind and steadfast. Another icon of Kadoka has entered the Kingdom of Heaven. Please know that we care, and you are in our prayers.

Harold was always such an interesting man to visit with, no matter your age, he always had a relevant story to tell. All we can try to do is live up to his example he set for us, he was always so kind.

For as long as I can remember, Harold was a faithful church member. We all missed him when he was unable to attend. He and Mary bring special memories to our Family Wagon Train days. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I was fortunate as a youngster growing up on the West Side of Kadoka to know Harold Schnee pretty well. He was a frequent visitor to our place, and we visited his Dairy often. He enjoyed teaching how to pull a teet & if you weren't alert, he could squirt you with a shot of milk in an instant & chuckle in amusement! He was the epitome of strong moral character and quiet strength; a Pioneer fit for a life in the country. He was always generous with his time & his resources, and our family is especially grateful for his hooking up his Mule Team to personally deliver our own Dad, Elton, to his final resting place in a wagon. That was Harold, never too busy or too tired to help out. Unfortunately, we will not be able to join the family in Celebration of Life as we only learned of it today, and the send off is tomorrow....but we will be with You, Clinton, Carol and Caron in Thoughts, Hugs & Prayers.

We are thinking of you all and our Prayers and Thoughts are with you. He was a wonderful man, and we sure missed him and Mary when they weren't able to come on the wagon train any more in the Hills. God be with you all.
