James "Jim" Kalkbrennerof New Underwood, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, October 22, 1997

James H. Kalkbrenner, better known as "Jim" to his family and friends, was born September 17, 1912, on his parents' homestead north of Wall, South Dakota, the son of Adolph and Emilie (Haaga) Kalkbrenner.
He grew up on the homestead north of Wall and received his elementary education in the Wall area prior to graduating from Rapid City High School.
As a young man he ranched with his brothers on Sage Creek, southwest of Wall, until he purchased the Fred Neumann ranch on Sage Creek.
Jim was united in marriage to Helene Luesing Nachtigall on June 19, 1957, at Rapid City.
They made their home on the ranch on Sage Creek, which they continued to operate until retiring in 1978 and moving into Wasta, where they have since resided.
Jim was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Wall. He served on the Township Board, served on the Quinn Tables School Board for several years, and was mayor of Wasta for several years.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Helene Kalkbrenner, of New Underwood; a daughter, Hazel Kalkbrenner of Pierre; a step-son, Peter Busch of Wicksville; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lawrence, George and Louis Kalkbrenner; and three sisters, Bertha M. Kalkbrenner, Emma Kalkbrenner, and Marguerite Johnson.
A memorial has been established.
