Howard L. Johnson

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Thursday, June 11, 1992
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 72

Howard L. Johnson was born January 24, 1920, at Sturgis, South Dakota, to Maurice and Tillie (Karrels) Johnson.

He grew up in the Sturgis area where he began his elementary education.  While in high school he moved with his family to Wall, South Dakota, where he graduated from the Wall High School in 1940.

Howard served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving mostly in the European Theatre.

He was united in marriage to Eunice Sebade on September 3, 1943, at San Pablo, California.

After his honorable discharge from the Army in October 1945, they returned to Wall.  While in Wall, Howard served as the postal clerk at the Wall Post Office for 31 years prior to retiring in January 1978.

He was one of the four original owners of the Wall Bowling Alley, which began in the early 1960s.

After his retirement they have continued to make their home in Wall.

Howard was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Wall.  He was a member of the Carroll McDonald American Legion Post #246 of Wall and the F.J. Willuweit V.F.W. Post of Quinn, South Dakota.  He served as a state athletic director for the American Legion Baseball Association for many years and was a member of the Wall Golf Course Association, which he enjoyed very much.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Eunice Johnson, of Wall; two sons, Bob Johnson and his wife, Vonna, of Rapid City, and Gail Johnson and his wife, Wanda, of Wall; a daughter, Marilyn Sutter and her husband, Rick, of Wall; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Johnson and Leslie Johnson, both of Dixon, California; one sister, Helen Schone, and her husband, Bob, of Quinn; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Johnson.
