Saxon M. Guptill Williams

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, April 15, 1992
at her home in Philip at the age of 70

Saxon Mollie Guptill was born September 1, 1921, in Washabaugh County, South of Interior, South Dakota, to Charles and Adelaide (Boomer) Guptill.

She grew to adulthood on a ranch south of Interior, South Dakota.  She attended Green Valley Grade School prior to attending high school in Hill City.

Saxon was united in marriage to Gene E. Williams on August 23, 1937, at Philip, South Dakota.  They were honored by their children and friends on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary on August 23, 1987.

Until the time of her death, Saxon was an active partner in the ranching operation that she and Gene have owned near the Badlands National Park at Cactus Flat since March 1, 1949.  Saxon also worked part-time at the Cactus Flat Souvenirs.

She was a life-time member of the Interior Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and a trustee.  Active in community affairds, Saxon helped organize the "This Is Your Life" fundraiser in honor of Dr. N.J. Sundet's pioneer work in providing medical facilities and service in the Kadoka area.  She also served on the Kadoka Independent School Board.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Gene E. Williams, of Philip; two daughters, Joane McKay and her husband, Don McKay, of Ames, Iowa, and June Covington of Lahaina, Hawaii; one son, Gene S. Williams and his wife, Linda, of Philip; five grandchildren: Marc and Troy McKay, Lori Rae Covington, and Tristen and Trevor Williams; one great-grandson, Eric Jonathan Covington; her step-father, Ralph Hockenbary, of Philip; one brother, Rodney Hockenbary, of Kilgore, Nebraska; one sister, Daphne Smith, of Des Moines, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Guptill and Adelaide Guptill Hockenbary; one grandson, Robert Lee Covington; and two brothers, Lt. Bengy Guptill and Grenfall Guptill.

In lieu of flowers, the family request a memorial be established.
