Fred W. Cook

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, June 15, 1989
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 83

Fred W. Cook was born February 5, 1906, at Vandalia, Illinois, to Thomas and Margaret (Wells) Cook.  As a young boy he moved with his parents to Minden, Nebraska, where he grew up and received his education.  Later they moved to White Hall, Illinois.

In 1928, Fred moved to Chiago, Illinois, where he worked for the Chicago North Western Railroad as an engineer.  In 1933 he traveled west and while enroute he worked as a logger in the Black Hills area near Hill City, South Dakota.

While there he met and later married Mathilda J. Paulson on June 6, 1935, at Lead, South Dakota.

They lived in the Black Hills area until 1939 when they returned to West Chicago where he resumed his employment with the Chicago North Western Railroad, a position he held for fifty years.

In 1958 Fred and Tillie owned and operated Cook's Camper and Trailer Sales in the West Chicago, Illinois, area.  They operated this until 1970 when they sold the business to their son, Roger Cook.  In 1975 they moved their residence to Philip, South Dakota.

His wife preceded him in death on May 29, 1982.  Fred continued to make his home in Philip.

Fred was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, both of Philip.  He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.  He helped with bringing the old school house in to Philip as a historical landmark.

Survivors include his two sons, Roger of West Chicago, Illinois, and Robert of North Pole, Alaska; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Clark of Laramie, Wyoming, and Mildred Meriman of White Hall, Illinois; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Mathilda, Fred was preceded in death by one son in infancy, his parents, and one sister.

A memorial is established.
