Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard and attended monthly drill in Wagner. He along with his father, ran the Mobil Gas Station in Pickstown. After their marriage they remained in Pickstown for three years before moving to Lake Andes, where he worked for an Auto Supply Store. They then moved to Vermillion where Jim worked as a material clerk for Clay Union Electric. In 1968, they moved to Wall where Jim continued as a work order clerk for West River Electric. He later took an accounting position with West River Electric where he continued until retiring in 1998.

During his time in Wall he was a member of the Wall Volunteer Fire Department, earning Fireman of the Year in 1981. As a young man, he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. Later in life, he enjoyed woodworking, riding motorcycles, and cleaning and polishing his vehicles.
