Rose Daum

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Friday, July 21, 2017
at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 83

Rose Arla (Houtkooper) Daum, age 83, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Kadoka Care Center in Kadoka, SD following a struggle with congestive heart failure.

Rose was born on October 28, 1933 near Corsica, SD. She was the younger of twin daughters (older twin Ruby) born to John and Alta (DeGeest) Houtkooper. She was the 3rd of 5 children.

Growing up on the farm her childhood was full of memories like milking cows, feeding chickens, picking rocks and surviving the blizzard of 1949 thanks to the kindness of neighbors. She graduated from Corsica High School in 1952. After graduation she worked on the family farm, then moved to Mitchell, SD where she worked in the dietary department of the Mitchell Hospital. She later moved to Denver, CO working for Dr. Peterson DDS as a Dental Hygienist. While in Denver she enjoyed church activities, bowling, going to movies, roller skating, and hiking. It was through mutual friends that during this time she met the love of her life. On June 28, 1962 in Aurora Center, SD she married Samuel (Sam) J. Daum.

Life’s adventures for Rose included supporting Sam while he was attending graduate school at South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota, raising a family and of course farming. In 1969 they returned their young family to Jones County, and made the town of Murdo their home becoming “city-farmers”. She had a “greenthumb”, loved gardening and canning the “fruits of her labor”. Making whole wheat bread, buns and cinnamon rolls was her joy. Often these loaves of bread made their way as gifts to the kids’ teachers. She had a love for animals which was passed along to her children. She always enjoyed getting together with her parents, siblings and their families during holidays and special occasions. When traveling the many miles between visiting family, then later her children in Minnesota and Wisconsin, many laughs were had while teasing her about the many old run down farmsteads that “she had neglected”.

Rose’s beautiful smile, contagious laughter and sincere love for life were enjoyed by all who knew her. Rose gave the best hugs and after she could no longer stand, following a leg amputation she still gave "hand hugs" using her incredible grip. Her greatest joy was in Christ, her love for her children, grand-children and many nieces and nephews.

Rose worked for over 20 years at the Sioux Motel, until her stroke in April of 2012. She was a 40-year member of the Gideons Auxiliary, was a member of the Okaton Evangelical Free Church and in more recent years the Community Bible Church in Murdo. Rose encouraged her children to always walk with the Lord. She enjoyed singing songs of praise at church and prayed faithfully for her family and others.

Rose is survived by her four children Ruth Daum and Cheryl Daum of Murdo, SD, Sharon (Tom) Daum-Bartelt of Rapid City, SD, and Brian (Tammi) Daum of Belgrade, MT; two grand-children Caleb and Abigail Daum, her sister-in-law Edna Houtkooper of Denver, CO, sisters Ruby Bult of Corsica, SD, Donna (Don) Kuyper of Plankinton, SD, Mavis Veurink of Platte, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by: her parents, brother Ken, brother-in-laws John DeWaard, Stanley Bult, Edwin Veurink and loving husband Sam.
