Tony Gould

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Saturday, November 5, 2022
at his daughter's home in Pierre, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family at the age of 65

Anthony Louis "Tony" Gould was born on January 20, 1957 in Kadoka, to Shirley (Rittel) and the late Gene Gould. He joined his brother Gene, and later would have two little brothers, Jerald and David.

Tony grew up in Kadoka and there’s not a person in town who hasn’t met him. He was deeply connected and rooted in the Kadoka Community his entire life. Tony was a reliable and steady citizen that considered everyone in town a friend. He loved the people, his job and the town to his core.

Tony was an avid sports lover, player and fan. He was always up for watching or playing almost any sport. A lifelong Kadoka Kougar, Tony began as a basketball player in high school and later cheered on generations of Kougar athletes from the sidelines. He especially loved to cheer on his own daughters. Tony also played softball, but was most well known as a fantastic bowler.

Tony began bowling when the Kadoka High School team needed someone to fill in when he was just an 8th grader. This started decades of bowling league and tournaments with his teammates, Dale O’Connell, Bill Stone, and Tom Struble. The four of them traveled to tournaments around the area and enjoyed trips to the South Dakota State Bowling tournaments and to Las Vegas.

Tony always looked on the bright side. This was useful for his two other hobbies: fishing and the Minnesota Vikings. Always optimistic, his tales of fishing maybe were a bit exaggerated and he always had faith the Vikings would “pull one out.” Never one to miss a Vikings game or an opportunity to fish, he always believed both would be successful!

Just as Tony was loyal to his Vikings and the Kougars, he was to his job. Tony started working at the People’s Market a year after high school and stayed until his very end. For nearly 45 years he was behind the meat counter slicing deli meats, giving a patron a joke or tease or sneaking a treat to his littlest customers. He loved working in the store and visiting shoppers just as much as they enjoyed stopping to visit with him. Tony “came with the store” when Joe Leutenegger purchased the store in the 80s. When Joe’s daughter Shawna and husband Rich took over the store, Tony considered them a special part of his own family, not just his employer. Tony loved his job and could always be counted on to give customers a friendly smile, a joke or two, help them find whatever they needed, or guide someone along with advice and a hug.

Tony was deeply dedicated to his family and those he loved. He was greatly patriotic and loved collecting memorabilia, sports trading cards and historic treasures. He loved having company and always made time for visitors. He laughed loudly and often, and will be missed greatly by all.

Tony was preceded in death by his father Gene and brothers Gene and Jerald.

Tony is survived by his mother Shirley Gould of Sturgis, brother David of Gillette, WY, daughters Shelia (Mike) Wenk, Eian, Deklyn and Ramsey of Pierre; Shalina McClelland, Anniston, Emerson and Riggs of Pierre; step-daughter Shalista (Dwayne) Anderson, Kenedi, Somer, Pryce and Piper of Sioux Falls; nephews Jerad, Jeremy, and Jacob Gould of Mosinee, Wi, whom Tony loved dearly; Aunts Rose Nelson of Midland, Leona Fredlund of Newell, Janice Schuller of Rapid City and Doris Park of Spearfish; Special friends, Shawna and Rich Bendt and the entire People’s Market family; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends, too numerous to mention.
