John Roger Crouch

in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 80

John Roger Crouch was born July 10, 1940 in Pennington County, Wall, South Dakota at his grandparents’ home to George Crouch and Bernice (Van Vleck) Crouch. John grew up in Wall, South Dakota and graduated from Wall High School in 1958. He was a member of the Army National Guard from 1959-1962.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 from South Dakota State College in Brooking, South Dakota with a major in Agriculture Education. John taught for two years and returned to South Dakota State University for a Master of Science Degree in Entomology graduating in 1967. In June of 1967, he began work with the Iowa Department of Agriculture in Des Moines, Iowa.

On February 15, 1969, he was united in marriage to Marie Heggen at the First United Methodist Church, Ankeny, Iowa. They were blessed with a son, Ken. John was a Boy Scout leader for troop 182 from 1968 – 1973.

The family moved to Clarinda, Iowa in 1977. John was a Regional Entomologist and covered 19 counties in Southwest Iowa. He published a book 1998 entitled “Young Leaf Feeders: A Key to Defoliating Larvae”. John retired in 2006.

John enjoyed hobbies of whittling and carvings, drawings, leatherwork, writing his memoirs. He also enjoyed teaching leatherwork and his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Crouch of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Ken Crouch and grandson, Collin Crouch; brothers, Keith Crouch of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Barth Crouch of Salina, Kansas; cousins; nieces; nephews and friends.

Preceding John in death were his parents, George and Bernice Crouch; brother, Kirk Crouch; aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Wall, South Dakota.

Interment will be held at Wall Cemetery, Wall South Dakota.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to John Crouch Memorial Fund for the family’s designation to various charities and organizations.
