E. Troy Hare was born January 5, 1916, in Glasco, Kansas to Roscoe and Mabel (Archer) Hare. She attended school at Glasco, Kansas for all her childhood years.
An only child, William “Slim” McNaught was born July 8, 1934 in Stuart, Nebraska to an early marriage.
E. Troy earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and Art from Black Hills State College in Spearfish. Post-graduate credit was earned on campus at the University of Colorado in Boulder through the University of South Dakota our of Vermillion and from Black Hills State College.
She was a past member of Kappa Delta Pi, NEA, SDEA, RCEA, and a charter member of Dakota Artists Guild in Rapid City.
In 1960 Troy moved to Rapid City to continue her teaching career in elementary and later secondary schools. She retired from teaching in 1978.
On January 18, 1975 Troy was united in marriage to Kermit Westby in Rapid City. After the death of her husband in 1983 she moved to Mesa, Arizona. She resided there until 1997 when she moved back to South Dakota to be near her son and family.
Troy very much enjoyed family gatherings and especially looked forward to the annual Brodkorb Family reunion in Wessington Springs. This is Darlene’s paternal family, and they had adopted Troy as one of their own. Being from a very small family she loved the happy, big gatherings.
Troy was blessed with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-granddaughter.
Troy was a member of the New Underwood Community Church for a number of years. She joined a Writer’s Group and wrote and published four books of poetry. She enjoyed attending and taking part in poetry gatherings across South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Nebraska.
Troy is survived by her son Slim (Darlene) McNaught; granddaughter Candace of New Underwood; grandsons Rockie (Juanita) McNaught of Rapid City, Monty (Susan) McNaught of Blunt, and Kevin McNaught of Draper; seven great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; brother Bill Hare of Concordia, Kansas; sister Alberta Paramore of Glasco, Kansas; two nieces and two nephews; special friend Linda Larsen of New Underwood; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kermit, and her parents.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 8, 2019 at New Underwood Community Church in New Underwood with Pastor Wes Wileman officiating.
Interment will be held at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Rapid City at a later date.
