In memory of

Vonna Johnson

of Rapid City, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Monument Health Hospice in Rapid City at the age of 80

Vonna Johnson was born December 21, 1943, in Kadoka, South Dakota to David and Frances (Knuth) Peterson. Vonna grew up on a ranch outside of Kadoka, which is where she learned the value of hard work and developed a love of animals both big and small. She attended all 12 years of school in Kadoka and graduated in 1962.

After high school she moved to Rapid City to attend Greens Beauty School. She began working as a beautician in Philip, South Dakota, which is where she met Robert “Bob” Johnson. They were married on October 29, 1966. After their marriage, they moved to Rapid City for a short time before settling in Wall. This is where she started her own beauty shop and worked long hours doing what she loved.

Vonna and Bob were blessed with two children, their daughter, Julie, born in 1971, and their son, Cory, born in 1975. Family was always a priority for Vonna, and after Cory was born, she sold her shop and became a stay-at-home mom. She cherished any opportunity to be able to take her kids to the pool, teach them to ride horses, and attend their ball games and school activities.

She was active with the Junior Miss Pageants and helped judge the events.

In her spare time, Vonna loved being outside, gardening, and growing beautiful flowers. She also had a knack for decorating.

Her pride and joy were her kids and grandkids. She looked forward to any time that she got to spend with them. Her heart was happy when they were around.

Vonna was full of kindness, love, and had a heart of gold. She was blessed to have so many great friends and a wonderful family that she adored.

Survivors include her two children, Julie (Scott) McDonald and their children Jenna and Jacob, and Cory (Jodi) Johnson and their children Jadyn and Adonis; one brother Dale "Buster" (Nancy) Peterson of Kadoka; one brother-in-law Gail (Wanda) Johnson of Rapid City; sister-in-taw Marilyn Wulf of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Vonna was preceded in death by her husband Bob; her parents David and Frances Peterson; and her in-laws Howard and Eunice Johnson.

Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Friday, August 9, at St. Therese of the Little Flower Catholic Church (532 Adams Street) in Rapid City, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 10, at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church (532 Adams St.) in Rapid City, with Father Kerry Prendeville as celebrant, and Father John Paul Trask as con-celebrant.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, at the Wall Cemetery.
