In memory of

Jeanette Burnett

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Scotchman Living Center in Philip at the age of 85

On June 19, 1940 in Pierre, SD, John and Thelma (Crain) Lappe welcomed Jeanette Adele Lappe and her twin sister, Janet, into the Lappe family. She was raised on the family farm in the Blunt area until they moved to Huron, SD. She attended Huron High School.

Jeanette was united in marriage to Richard A. Burnett on August 14, 1960 in Huron, SD. While residing in Huron, their four children, Diane, David, Terry and Denise were born. In 1967, they moved to Philip where Rich managed the Farmer’s Union Co-op station and Jeanette worked numerous jobs while raising their family. She was one of those gals who was a fantastic cook and she and Rich loved to garden as well. Jeanette cleaned the First Lutheran Church for many years until health issues prevented her from continuing. It was like a second home to her and she loved her church family very much. Jeanette lived the rest of her life in Philip except for a short stay at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Jeanette loved to be on the go! Whatever was happening, she wanted to do it. Travel on bus trips, go to ball games, church, bingo, play cards or do a puzzle – sign her up! She didn’t let the fact that her body had failed her stop her. She didn’t complain about it either. Well, maybe a little, but not as much as one would expect under the circumstances.

Jeanette spent the last nine years of her life in the Scotchman Living Center. She had lots of roommates through the years that she became very close to, along with their families, and they were so good to her too. We will forever be thankful to all her caregivers for their love and compassionate care. Numerous caregivers have told us she “trained” us well!

Grandma “Nette” loved and cherished her family more than anything in the world. We’re not sure you could find a grandmother who was more proud of her grandkids. They are her legacy.

Jeanette passed away on September 11th, 2025 after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and a short battle with cancer.

Survived by and grateful for sharing her life are her daughters, Diane Volk of Colorado Springs, CO, and Terry Stone of Wall, SD, and son David (Mary) Burnett of Philip, stepson Richard Schmidt (Konnie) of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, stepdaughter Marlene Helbach (Riley) of Almond, WI, her brother, Don Lappe of Brookings, SD, grandchildren: Chris (AnitaLyn) Riggins, Nichole (Joel) Williams, James (Kari) Volk, Damon (Meghan) Volk, Melissa (Eric) Holland, David R.
