In memory of

Alice Mettler

of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Wall, died on Friday, December 25, 2020 at Westhills Village Healthcare in Rapid City at the age of 82

Alice Mettler was born July 2, 1938 and raised on the family farm in Campbell County, South Dakota to Jacob and Emelia (Oberlander) Heiser. Alice lived a life rich with faith, generosity, vision, and joy. She was a woman who was fiercely loved by all those who came to know her, and had a knack for making strangers and friends alike feel special and heard.

A union in marriage to Stan Mettler brought a lifetime of adventure, love and their two children, Stewart and Tina. With a drive for success, Alice and Stan set their sights on retail business from venturing in dry-cleaning and grocery store ownership to their gift shops in Wall. Alice had the tenacity and grit to find achievement in her entrepreneurial instincts that allowed her to enjoy the pleasures of life, to which she took full advantage. Drawn to the beauty of fashion, the rush of a gamble, and a taste for cuisine and drinks, Alice was sure to make the best of her time on earth.

It cannot go without saying that Alice put giving back to the forefront of her importance’s. Gifts, big or small, came from a place of selflessness and gratitude, easing the way for whoever was in need. Always trusting in the Lord, Alice knew and believed that life was extraordinary and somehow all would be okay. A legacy was built and is sure to be carried on through her friends and family, sharing her “Ally Cat of the Badlands” spirit.

Alice is survived by her son, Stewart (Rhonda) Mettler of Wall; daughter Tina (Calvin) Carstensen of Lusk, Wyoming; four grandchildren: Emily Carstensen, Kate LaRue, Benjamin Carstensen, and Charlsie Mettler; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Rutchske; one brother, Floyd Heiser; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Stan Mettler on March 6, 2019; her parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Wall.

Interment will follow at the Wall Cemetery.

We had the best time talking and telling stories to watch other. She had really good advice. We became very close and I missed her dearly this year. I haven't been able to see her since March due to the virus. I will think of her as one of the most genuine, stylish, straight to the point, loving women that I known. • Met Stan and Alice when they moved into WHV. Shared a drink and story or two here and at the Legion club. Played bridge with Alice. A while back met them getting into a white limo. They were so-o happy! They rented it to go to Ten Sleep for a wedding. Will always remember the smiles on their faces. Also, one of the last times we played bridge, Alice showed us a picture of a race horse that she had named that had already won almost a million dollars. • I met Alice last year while playing Mahjongg with a group of ladies at Westhills. She was eager to learn and eventually led to playing in her apartment three times a week! We had a lot of laughs and sadness but I enjoyed every minute with her. We shared a common bond in that I was on oxygen 24/7 For ten years and was taken off last summer, so I understood what it was like to live being tied to the cannula 24 hours a day!
