In memory of

Ardis McCormick

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at her home in Kadoka at the age of 93

Ardis McCormick, age 93, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at her home in Kadoka.

Ardis Shirley Brugman was born January 6, 1931, the only daughter of Clarence and Geneva (Spaur) Brugman in Kadoka, South Dakota. She joined brothers Kenton, Loren “Pete”, and Allen, before Reese and Bruce joined the family after her. They lived east of town on a farm where she attended country school. Ardis then attended Kadoka High School and graduated with the class of 1949. After graduation she worked for a local clothing store and continued dating her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” McCormick. Bob was drafted in 1951 so they decided to get married in Rapid City on November 13, 1951. Bob left for Korea in February, and Ardis kept working while he was away. When Bob returned, the girls started to arrive with Marcia being born in 1955, Barbara in 1957, and Nancy in 1959, all with November birthdays. They moved to the family farm, and Ardis became a full-time stay at home Mom. When the girls were all in school, she started her years working at the Kadoka School, impacting many young people’s lives over the years.

Her many interests included activities for her grandchildren, gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, and researching genealogy. Ardis created many gifts by hand which are still in use to this day. Anybody who ever saw her gardens of flowers marveled at the beauty which she shared with many over the years.

In retirement, the house that her grandparents built in 1926 came up for sale, they bought it moved to town. Ardis spent many days in that house as a child with her Grandmother Amy and her wish was to finish her life right there in that house, and that’s exactly how the good Lord took her home at age 93.

Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Robert “Bob” McCormick, who resides in the Scotchman Living Center in Philip; three daughters: Marcia McCormick of Kadoka who has the family farm, Barbara (Jim) Petoske of Sioux Falls, and Nancy (Marv) Majerus of Buffalo, Wyoming; eight grandchildren: Lucas (Hayli) Mayfield, Lacey Mayfield, Kory (April) Petoske, Kevin (Emily) Petoske, Lori (Nick) Yunker, Amy (Jordan) Miller, Ryan (Hailey) Majerus, and Andrea (Brandon) Jackson; 15 great-grandchildren: Raegan, Hadli, and Rowan Mayfield, Reese, Alexis, Gavin, and Sam Petoske, Evalyn and Eric Miller, Cannon and Hannah Yunker, Emmett, Sam, Owen, and Noah Jackson, and one more on the way; brother Bruce Brugman of Rapid City; brother-in-law Donald McCormick of Cathedral City, California; sisters-in-law Darlene McCormick of Spearfish and Babe Brugman of Santa Ana, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ardis was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Geneva Brugman; brothers Kenton, Loren, Allen, and Reese Brugman; in-laws Earl and Pearl McCormick; brother-in-law Ronald McCormick; and sisters-in-law Geraldine, Yvonne, Lee, and Norma.

Cards and memorials can be sent to P.O. Box 393 Kadoka, SD 57543.

A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2024 at the Kadoka City Auditorium Annex with Pastor Jesse Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at the Kadoka Cemetery.

  • I really don't know where to begin. It seems like I've know Ardis forever. I will definitely miss seeing her out in her flower beds! She had a lot of impact on a lot of kids lives during her years at school. Hold on to those memories. She will be missed! God bless all of you! ~ Jean Holzkamp Kadoka (3/1/2024)
  • So sorry for your loss, Ardis was a special lady. All of the family will be in my prayers. ~ Diana Elwood Volborg, MT (3/1/2024)
  • Ardis not only impacted students lives during her time at Kadoka school, but greatly touched mine from my first year in Kadoka 40+ years ago. I was a second year teacher, and worked in title one with Ardis, Mary, Addison, and Tootie Stout. They were quite the crew who were respectful of me yet taught me more on how to live and be a good person. They also knew how to have a good time! We used to spend time laughing over silly things that brought a lightness to the job. I always admired her for her artist, artistic and crafting abilities to this day. I press flowers as a memory to her. God bless you, Ardis McCormick. May your family find peace, knowing they are related to such a great lady. ~ Karen M Byrd Kadoka (3/1/2024)
