In memory of

Ethel Freeman

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Saturday, December 24, 2022 at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 90

Ethel Irene Spinsby was born November 11, 1932, in Philip, South Dakota, the youngest of three children born to John and Isabel (Myers) Spinsby. Ethel grew up on the family homestead and attended rural school and graduated from Midland High School in 1951.

Ethel was united in marriage to Glenn Freeman in 1952. Glenn and Ethel had three children, Bryan Lee, Lynn Ann “Barb” and Valerie Layne. Two children from a previous marriage Claude Jesse Freeman and James Glenn Freeman joined the family in 1965. They farmed and ranched at the Freeman’s Homestead established in 1906 and held the mail route contract out of Stamford for many years.

In 1965, Glenn and Ethel took advantage of the location of the property near I-90 and built one of the first 35 KOA Campgrounds there. The business is still in operation today. The marriage ended in 1969, and Ethel moved to Rapid City and worked for Timberline for many years until she retired in 1999.

Ethel moved back to Kadoka in 2004, and spent the last two years of her life in the Kadoka Nursing Home, where she passed away on December 24, 2022.

Survivors include children Claude Freeman of Kadoka, Bryan Freeman of Minneapolis, Lynn “Barb” Guthmiller of Rapid City, and Valerie Rayevich of Missoula, Montana; four grandchildren John Freeman, April Freeman, Brandon Freeman and Justice Guthmiller, all of Rapid City; her sister JoAnn Moyer of Tucson, Arizona; nephews Mark and Mike Moyer of Tuscon; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her brothers Jack and Billy Spinsby; step-son James Freeman; Claudette Hoag; and her parents.

Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 144 Kadoka, SD 57543.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12, at the Belvidere Community Church in Belvidere with Pastor Jesse Taylor officiating.

  • Gramma- I knew you would be gone one day and even though I have tried to prepare myself, I'm still heartbroken as I knew I'd be. Thank you for your positivity and sense of humor. I have spent years trying to perfect your pancakes. I miss your amazingly juicy roast and Yukon potatoes. I'm sad Raelynn won't have you. I remember you making me feel safe and loved my whole life and I have yet to find that unconditional love in anyone besides my daughter. I think of you every time I eat cookies and cream ice cream. I remember how you liked to hang clothes and bedding out on the line and how much you liked fresh, clean bedding. I talked to you on your birthday 2 years ago and you asking me how old you were and I said, "oh about 29" and how you laughed. Thank you for everything you taught me and the love you have for all of us. I know how much you loved your kids and you talking about them with so much love. We all love you Gramma, thank you for everything. Love you forever and I'll see you on the other side. ~ April Freeman Rapid City (12/28/2022)
  • Mom you are a great inspiration. The joy you brought us will never end and someday we'll be together again! Though we miss you we know you are with Jesus and those who have gone on before you. Thank you for being a great mom! I love you so very much! ~ Lynn Guthmiller Rapid City SD (12/28/2022)
