In memory of

Roy James Buckmaster

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 85

Roy James Buckmaster was born April 16, 1930, in Philip, South Dakota, the son of James and Iona (Smith) Buckmaster. As a young fellow he dabbled in the dirt business around Kadoka, building dams, water lines, and ditches. Around 1950, things started to slow down so he got a job on a drilling rig that was drilling the first water well in Kadoka. He then left with the rig and went into Nebraska to drill wells.

Roy entered the U.S. Army on February 15, 1952 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on November 17, 1953.

In 1959, he moved out to Wyoming and worked in uranium mines for a few years and bought a farm 2 ΒΌ miles east of Pavillion, Wyoming, where he ran cows and had a small construction company, plowing snow and building trails until 1980. Some of his land leveling jobs included building up the lake south of Lander, Wyoming and some small state highway jobs.

In 2001 Roy bought the West Motel Building and sold the farm. He also purchased the Ponderosa Motel and RV Park, which he sold ten years later, as Roy began to slow down. He has continued to live at the West Motel in Kadoka.

Roy is survived by his partner Teddy Louise James of Kadoka; one son James Leroy Buckmaster of Sterling, Colorado; two daughters Joyce Kisinger of Akron, Colorado, and Cheryl Lee Harper of Olympia, Washington; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; one sister Betty Joanne Cordes of Pueblo, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Roy was preceded in death by his son Dale Buckmaster as a result of a car accident south of Buffalo, Wyoming.

  • Hello to you Buckmaster "kids".. I don't suppose you remember the summers of 1966/1967 as vividly as I do, but I spent them with Don & Delores Denke and we were neighbors to you. I knew your dad then as well, and all of you "kids". You were the nearest people and Jim & Dale were my buddies for sure. Jim, Dale and I walked into Pavillion a few times to church & "Sunday School". I had limited experience with religion at that time and asked Jim and Dale about the collection that was taken, where it went to. Who decided who took it up. I am glad to those young men, they informed me that the person who collected the cash DID NOT get to keep it..! I didn't know. So I got my first religious fetching up from the Buckmaster kids. Praises to you, Roy (and Ramona) your family means a lot to me. ~ David K. (Fuddy) Hansen (1/31/2016)
