In memory of

Jon Dougherty

of Black Hawk, South Dakota, died on Saturday, November 11, 2023 north of Midland, South Dakota at the age of 73

Jon J. Dougherty, 73, of the Black Hills, SD, died November 11, 2023. He was born in Ponca, Nebraska on August 5, 1950 to John B. Dougherty and Alice M. Kniefl Dougherty. Being the youngest of 8 children, Jon was often enticed to climb trees that his older brother David would rapidly crop down returning Jon swiftly to the forest floor. He attended South Sioux City High School before joining the Air Force. In the Air Force, Jon was stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War.

Upon entering back into civilian life, Jon returned to his beloved Black Hills, where he met the love of his life, Linda S. Gondek. Jon and Linda were married in August of 1975. Ten years later they were blessed with the arrival of their daughter, Becky.

He was an avid reader who enjoyed learning as much as he could about history, culture, and the natural world around him. He took much joy in hiking, bicycling, motorcycling, fly fishing, and kayaking all over the Hills. He was clever, with a tremendous sense of humor and he rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy and his daily Jeopardy calendar clue (a traditional annual Christmas present).

Jon’s happiest times were as “GRANDPA JON”, spending time with Becky, son-in-law, Joe, and grandsons, Joey aka Hawkeye (7) and Ollie (5). He took an active role in the lives of his grand kids. He was there for every birthday, baseball or soccer game, and school concert. He loved taking them out to the park to play and staying in to build forts at home.

Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; his parents, John and Alice Dougherty; sisters Dorothy, Pat, and Ruth; and longtime friend Dennis.

He left behind his adoring grandchildren, Joey and Ollie; daughter Becky and her husband Joe. Siblings Joan, Rachel, David, and Alice, as well as beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Jon will always be remembered for his strong masculine exterior but more deeply for his kind heart. He leaves behind so many stories of joy and laughter. We couldn’t have asked for a better dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him and we will miss him every day.

A memorial account has been set up at Black Hills Federal Credit Union for those who wish to make a donation. Memorial funds will be contributed to a college savings account for Jon’s pride and joy, his grandsons, Joey and Ollie. The family thanks you for all your thoughts, prayers, and condolences.
