of Faith, South Dakota, died on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 80
Marshall Lee Carr, age 80, passed away on October 5, 2024, with family by his side. He was born to Millard and Alice (Knutson) Carr on July 19, 1944, in Philip, South Dakota.
Growing up in the close-knit community of Philip, Marshall cherished the lifelong friendships he formed and took pride in maintaining the bonds that meant so much to him throughout his life. In 1962, he graduated from Philip High School, where he was known as a natural athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track. His talent led him to continue his athletic journey at Black Hills State College, where he played both basketball and football.
In 1967, Marshall met and married Tacy Carr, and they began their 57 years together, building a good life filled with laughter and adventure. During this time, they raised a family together, daughters Marcy, Tashall, and Mindy.
Marshall worked for Black Hills Power and Light until 1972, when family living in Alaska encouraged them to move north. His adventurous spirit led him to embrace new challenges and opportunities in Alaska, where he worked as an IBEW Union Lineman until his retirement.
His love of hunting and fishing began at an early age, but while living in Alaska, it became a passion that he enjoyed sharing with friends and family. Alaska captured his heart, and he never stopped talking about the Last Frontier.
Marshall never knew a stranger. He was a good, honest person and had a generous heart. He selflessly gave whatever he could to help others, and taught his children and grandchildren to defend the underdogs. He was a larger than life presence, with great stories of adventure.
He is survived by his wife, Tacy, three children, Marcy Farris and husband Victor of Palmer, AK, Shelly Carr and husband Chris Allen of Spokane, WA, and Mindy Berglund and husband Brian of Faith, South Dakota, three grandchildren, Marshall Farris and wife Missy of Anchorage, AK, Faith Cullenberg and husband Myles of Wilmington, NC, and Tace Berglund of Faith, SD, one great-grandson, Rhodes Lee Farris, brother-in-laws Dale Hall of Deadwood, SD and Leo Gittings and wife Sandra Gittings of Philip, SD, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and special friends who were like family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Millard and Alice Carr, and his sisters Patty Carr and Judie Gittings.
A celebration of life gathering will be held next spring at the 73 Bar in Philip, on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Details will follow as it gets closer.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 40 Faith, SD 57626.
