In memory of

Karla Ainslie

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City at the age of 54

Karla Jean Ainslie was born December 4, 1962, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the fourth child of George and Kay (Stephenson) Ainslie. She grew up and received her education in Philip, graduating in 1981. During her childhood, she enjoyed basketball and softball, and taught many kids swimming lessons. She loved the sun and being outside.

Karla was united in marriage to Jeff Schumacher in September 1981 in Philip, and to this union were born two children, Jake and Jackie. They made their home in Philip before moving various places in western South Dakota.

In November 1992, Karla was united in marriage to Mike Livingston. They made their home in Pierre, where Karla obtained her journeyman electricians license. She moved to Thurman, Iowa, where she worked as an electrician for Local #22 Union.

In 2011, she returned to Philip, where she worked for Philip Livestock Auction until October 2016, when she was diagnosed with stage four cancer.

She had a unique sense of fashion, and was known for her various outfits while loading and unloading cattle. She looked forward to her annual Easter Egg Hunt she had for the kids and the adults.

Survivors include her son Jacob (Alex) Schumacher of Glenville, Minnesota, and her daughter Jackalynn “Jackie” Schumacher (Lance Swenson) of Brookings, South Dakota; five grandchildren James and Josey Schumacher, Peytan Schumacher, and Madysen and Grady Swenson; her parents George and Kay Ainslie; three sisters Diane (Gary) Walker of Rapid City, Cheryl Behrend of Philip, and Marlene Scheessele of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Karla was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Ainslie on October 3, 1993; her maternal grandparents Katherine and Gordon Stephenson; her paternal grandparents Charles and Reland Ainslie; and a cousin Cathy Knight.

Visitation will be held 6-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 20, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with Father Gary Oreshoski as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers a memorial is established. Cards and memorials may be sent to Kay at P.O. Box 182, Philip, SD 57567.

  • Sometimes the words just come easy
Other times my thoughts get stuck
I guess I write partially as a way I grieve
But all that's filling my thoughts is CANCER SUCKS!
Taken from us way to early
Was a woman tough as nails
    Climbing those big electrical poles
    Emptying all those shitty pails
But Karla had a soft side too
The LOVE she had for her children was like no other
She cherished every one of you
Her children, her parents, her sisters and brother
Growing up I was a little jealous
    I always wanted your tan
And in adulthood your work ethic
Heck you were as tough as any man
    At any family gathering
And our children would give us some sass
Be honest everyone...didn't those words cross your lips
"You better shape up,be good, or I will have Karla kick your A$$
It's difficult to even conceive you are in heaven
With so many loved ones that passed before
Always know we will forever love you
Now it's your time to soar my dear cousin soar!
