Janice Carlbom, better known as “Jan” by her family and friends, was born to Walter and Rose Kirsch on May 24, 1938, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She moved with her family to the family farm, northeast of Blunt, South Dakota, and later moved with her family into the town of Blunt.

Jan graduated from Blunt High School in 1956 and attended Presentation Junior College for two years. She taught elementary school for three years in Miller, South Dakota, and after that she obtained a Bachelor’s in Education degree from Black Hills State College in 1962.

Jan was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Carlbom on July 23, 1962 and resided on the family ranch south of Interior for all her adult life, with the exception of the past two years when it became necessary for her to move to Rapid City for additional care after her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.

Jan’s life was spent teaching elementary students at Interior Elementary School, a profession she loved dearly. She and Chuck raised three children on the family ranch and enjoyed camping trips, attending many dances together, and attending their children and grandchildren’s many activities.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Chuck; three children: Jane (Steve) Arity, Michael (Kim) Carlbom, and Dan (Julie) Carlbom; grandchildren: Connor, Mackenzie, and Sydney Carlbom, Brianna and Preston Arity, and Chase and Reagan Carlbom; one sister Rhonda Kirsch; brother Jon (Snookie) Kirsch; sister-in-law Jeanne Kirsch; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marilyn and Russ Stone; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dep and Rose Kirsch; brother Richard Kirsch; and in-laws George and Stella Carlbom.

A rosary service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 6, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
