Stanley Jacobsonof Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, December 28, 2007

Haley Stanley Jacobson was born May 18, 1910, at 4:00 o’clock during Haley’s Comet, near Nowlin, South Dakota, the son of Peter and Ellen (Ritland) Jacobson. His older brother, Nowlin, was named after the town of Nowlin where his parents farmed and ranched. Stanley received his education in the Nowlin area and graduated from Nowlin High School. His early days he rode the open ranges, sold papers, and delivered milk to their customers. He helped his father break horses that were to be sold to the government during WWI and they also sent some into Iowa. In 1927, the year the flood washed out a lot of the CNW Track, he began working for them at 36 cents per hour.
Stanley was united in marriage to Loleta Ziegenbein on November 28, 1928, at Pierre, South Dakota, and to this union was born one son Donald. Stanley continued to work for the CNW Railroad and in 1943, they raised the wages to 43 cents per hour. Later he farmed and ranched for fourteen years.
In 1945, they bought Lane’s Cafe in Midland which they operated until 1946. He then managed the Midland Coop Elevator and also clerked in Toe Johnson’s Store in Midland and in Philip. He worked for Dick Young in the Midland Light Plant until West Central Electric out of Murdo purchased the Midland Light Plant and he went to work for them in the Right of Way Department. He also worked for the North Dakota Surveyors when needed. In 1953, Stanley and Loleta moved to Philip where he worked for the city of Philip and later worked as a clerk for various places in Philip. He served as Deputy Sheriff for fourteen years and managed the Masonic Cemetery for sixteen years. After retiring, they moved to Pierre, until moving back to Philip, where they have since resided.
Stanley was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Philip, a member of the Midland Masonic Lodge #183, where he served as Worship Master in 1954, he was a member of the Philip Masonic Lodge #153 where he served as Worship Master in 1972, the Pierre Masonic Lodge #27, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonary of Yankton, Yelding Temple of Aberdeen; El Riad Shrine Temple of Sioux Falls, Yelding Clowns of Aberdeen, 4-Rivers Shrine Club of Philip, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #139 where he served as Worthy Patron in 1953. He served as President of the 1902 Cowboys for three years and belonged to the South Dakota Stockman’s Association.
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 79 years, Loleta Jacobson of Philip; four grandchildren Donald Dean Jacobson of Ft. Pierre, Jeffery Joe Jacobson of Little Falls, Minnesota, Jerry Rae Jacobson of Little Falls, Minnesota, and Dawn Lynette Marie Jacobson of Wakefield, Nebraska; seven great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Stanley was preceded in death by his son Donald Jacobson; his parents; and one brother Nowlin Jacobson.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery, Philip.
