Dwayne Eugene Newman, better known as “Sonny” to his family and friends, was born September 12, 1937, on his parents’ homestead eight miles west of Philip, South Dakota, the son of Harry and June Elizabeth (Carstensen) Newman. He grew up on the homestead and attended grade school in Philip for two years before attending grade school in Quinn for one year, then returning back to Philip, where he graduated from Philip High School in 1956. In conjunction with the ranch, he owned and operated Newman Repair, selling batteries and tires and doing all kinds of auto and farm equipment repair. In 1973, they purchased the homestead, which they continued to operate.
Sonny was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he held all offices in the church and served as an elder for the last thirty years. He was a member of the Bad River Senior Citizens, and served on the Fairview School Board for many years, has been a director on the Bad River Rural Water System since 1983, and held all offices on the Grandview Township Board.

Donna & family:

We have many memories of Sonny and the good times we enjoyed at Our Redeemer. I know this is a time for memories and I want to share one with you and your family that happened following a funeral. I got a flat tire and Sonny put all new tires on the car. I placed a 'thank you" in the paper to Jack Rush for the tires and a number of people wondered if there ever were an6y tires. We got lots of mileage out of that story.

Another time I was out getting my oil changed on my car and was listening to stories being told by various people and after awhile, Sonny introdcued me, "This is my minister, he comes out about once a week for sermon illustrations." Death is never easy, but at least when it is the death of a Christian we know where they are. Our prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Rev. Dennis J. McManus

~ Pastor McManus Benson, MN (8/13/2011)

Donna and family, we have a million wonderful memories of Sonny and the rest of you----the many evenings Sonny and Justin repaired the "unrepairable"---coffee and cake--jokes, and the list could go on and on. Eternity waits for all of us, and knowing family and friends are there makes the steps along the way a little lighter. Sending love and hugs, and our prayers.

Donna, Debbie, Dianne, Janelle and Jeanine-
My heart goes out to your family. I remember the old times at my Grandparents ranch on a Saturday night. Or at one of the old time round ups. I can smell the sweet prairie grass now. You and Sonny and your family will always have a special place in my heart. Sonny always had a joke or story for us kids. I wish that I could be there. With all of our loves and prayers.

~ Kenna (Seaton) and David Chapin Jenks, Oklahoma (8/13/2011)
So saddened to read of Sonny's passing. What a joker he was, dad used to take me out to get new tires on my car and he always joked and wondered if I had a boyfriend, as he thought he would make a pretty good one! The socializing was almost better than the tires I think and I never had any problems with my tires! Thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through the days ahead saying good-by to a great husband, father and grandfather.

I was so sorry to hear about Sonny's death. So many memories flood my mind as I think of him. He was such a kind and compassionate person who did so much for my family. I will never forget his quick wit, joking manner, and his infectious smile. As a small child, he was like a second father to me who always treated me with kindness and respect. I'm imagining that he is in Heaven having coffee with Mom and telling her stories that make her laugh.
May God give you strength in the days ahead as your hearts ache for his presence in your lives. Rejoice in knowing that he is with his Savior and reaping his rewards in Heaven as a faithful servant here on earth.

Dear Donna and family,

Rose and I just returned from a 3 week trip to Indiana & Ohio for our granddaughter’s wedding and to attend the Convocation of the new North American Lutheran Church at Columbus, OH. We drove from the Sioux Falls area to Philip yesterday and arrived about 3:30, stopping at Coyle’s Super Valu. I asked Becky Brech what was new in Philip and was I ever suddenly shocked! Our hearts ache for you and your family. Since we missed the memorial service yesterday morning, we will be sending you a personalized sympathy card. Each day we are reminded that ‘we have here no lasting city.’ (Hebrews 13:14) but “Jesus Chris is the same yesterday and today and for ever.” (Heb. 13:8) Neither Rose nor I can imagine the sudden shock that you and your family must be experiencing. I would imagine that it is a numb feeling. May the Lord Jesus give you strength.

Our love to you,

Our prayers goes out to you. I was shocked when I talked to Jo-Ann and she told me the news, he was such a good person helping people I know he had a part one time I needed for my truck and I came out there and he fixed it right up for me and that was years ago. I always enjoyed his jokes when he would stop in at Jo-anns. or see him anywhere he always had one for me. He will really be missed.

Dear Donna and the Newman family,

Always enjoyed being around Sonny. He was ahead of me in high school. Always a big smile and an enouraging word for the younger kids like me who were coming up. Saw Sonny and Donna in Las Vegas a few years ago and enjoyed a good visit. My Mother Frances grew up near the Newmans southwest of Philip from about 1916 to 1934. She always had great words for the Newmans and we feel the same way about Sonny and Donna.

Donna - I was shocked to hear of Sonny passing and remember the fellowship I felt when Dave Gednalske and I would come down deer hunting. You and Sonny treated me like family and was always ready to feed me. Occasionally I ran into Sonny in Rapid and he always remembered me. So sorry for this long delay but since I retired I haven't read a newspaper and I don't see Dave and Pearl that often anymore. They were the ones that informed of Sonny's departure. He was truly a friend and will miss him.
