Dennis Jay Kennedy was born July 13, 1945, in Philip, South Dakota, the son of Howard and Dorothy (Aaberg) Kennedy. He grew up in Philip where he attended school through high school. He graduated from South Dakota State University in Pharmacy in 1968. Upon graduation, took a job with Walgreen Drug Stores in Phoenix, Arizona.
He worked in Phoenix for approximately a year before being drafted into the US Army. After basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he was stationed at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, during the Vietnam conflict.
Upon his discharge in 1971, he went back to Phoenix to work for two more years. In 1973, he moved to Denver, Colorado, and owned a clinic pharmacy for three years. Then in 1976, due to health reasons and a job opening at the drug store in Faith, he moved back to South Dakota. In the fall of 1978, he moved back to Philip to become associated with Howard and Wayne “Duck” at Kennedy Implement and Auto Company. He sold the business in 2010 and retired in Philip.
Dennis developed lifelong friends in high school and college which he would travel to visit, his favorite activity. He loved his cars, clothes and interior decorating. He loved music and was a member of the Haakon County Crooners for many years.
Survivors include brother Kent (special friend Kathy) of Rapid City, sister Judy (Paul) Goldhammer of Wall, brother Scott (Beth) of Philip, Judy’s children Heather, Shane (Val and daughter Angela) and Kempton (daughter Kennedy), Scott’s children Radley, Tyrel and Blayne, Kent’s step children Pamela, Michele, James and Jesse.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Dorothy.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 2, at the American Legion Hall in Philip.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.
Interment with military honors was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
I want to celebrate my brother Denny’s life today. Obviously he touched each and every one of you in a very special way.
Denny started out as a baby with health issues in the form of colic. For all of you mothers who had had a child who cries for no apparent reason, you can relate to my mother’s frustration. But more than that her main concern was a possible eviction notice from the apartment manager if he didn’t shut up. So she bounced, rocked, and cradled her first born son, as only a mother would do.
As Denny grew older his interest was drawn to music. Then later he developed an impeccable taste for art and interior design. Any of you who saw him home or room in the Silverleaf can relate to this.
One dear friend commented on her last visit with Denny, he always brought us together. He was the catalyst for social gatherings, fun and conversation. And many friends mentioned that he always treated their children as his own, going to weddings, sending cards and phone calls of encouragement. He was a very caring and loving man.
My mother was the love of his life. He never married, knowing full well no one could ever cook as well as she. But more than that, her love and devotion to him was endless. And the day she died, a part of Denny died as well.
Our mom taught us many Godly virtues which Denny never forgot…to love one another, to treat others as we would want to be treated, and give and not to receive. It was those principles he lived by, caring for elderly widows, providing Heather with wigs when she was diagnosed with cancer, as he was concerned she maintain her dignity. I guess you would say, he lived his faith.
So I encourage each of you today to take up his cross and be a better person. To help those who are lonely, to give to others, and to always say thank-you.
So thank you brother Dennis for your undying love for me, for all your beautiful cards and for taking care of me when I needed you most. Rest in peace.
Your loving sister,
Judy

To all the family I am so sorry for your loss, but glad for Denny the suffering is over. It's hard to believe that so many years have passed since we were in the basement of the Kennedy house going to Cub Scout meetings. The birthday parties at my house when I turned 6 and 7. Then to run into him when he was in the pharmacy in Thornton,Co. which was ten blocks from our house in Thornton. Last but not least was all our conversations at the Philip Post Office, since we are all creatures of habit our time to show up for mail was 9:30AM. God speed Denny. Sherm

We were sorry to read of the passing of Denny-and understand that it has been a hard road for him as of late. We are hoping he is at rest now. I remember going in for parts when I first came to this country, and Jason would usually send a note with all the details after a few failed attempts on my part! But on one occasion, I had really no idea and Denny was trying to help me. When I apologized for not knowing more, he just flashed that smile at me and said, "Honey-I don't know anything either-but that's the beauty of being the boss-I can get away with it and YOU can't!" He went and got help and we laughed! He was always very friendly and kind. I last saw him at the Silverleaf when the Milesville School was Christmas caroling-he filled his 'go mug' at the coffee machine and enjoyed the little concert. Smiling all the while...
Prayers to his family for their loss!

Oh, how we will miss this man, Denny. A man of true love and generosity for his fellowman. Always a great businessman at Kennedy's, willing to help and look out for his customers. We especially enjoyed seeing him at church with Paul and Judy. A hug, handshake, and smile was always ours. What style! Something I would always comment on and he would just smile, not being one to make a big deal of himself. Many years ago when I was fairly new to the hair business I had this man named Dennis on the book one day for a perm and I thought Oh great this will be some old guy that doesn't know what he wants! Boy was I mistaken! It was Dennis and he knew exactly what he wanted, he told me he normally went to Denver but thought he would give someone in Rapid a try at doing what he wanted. That was the beginning of a very loyal client to me. In fact when he moved into his grandparents house he invited me to come see what all he'd had done. So one day mom and I went over and it was beautiful however mom about flipped when he opened the oven door to reveal that is where he stored video tapes! Mom often talked about that and how you could possibly have an oven and never intend to use it, she who loved to bake and cook! Rest in peace Denny, I will miss seeing your smiling face in Philip.

Well hear we go Denny! It was in 1945 that a bunch of us little rug rats started first grade together in Philip, SD. We made it all the way to graduate together in 1963. That was remarkable. As we shared together in our jobs and professions away from Philip we grew fond of our recent reunions and "giggling" and laughing that "we can't lie about our age!" These photos and memories will be lifelong treasures!! Take care Denny! May we all reunite again!!

Dear Family of Denny, what a joy he was to know. When my mother entered the Silverleaf, I renewed an acquaintance with him. He was so thoughtful and concerned about my mother and if he was too 'loud' as her room was next to him. He had a smile, no matter what and when I visited in the hospital, he was so positive. Judy, loved your essay on his life, it really made him come to life. He will be missed. So much.

I was deeply saddened to see notice of Denny’s passing in the paper. Fortunately, I was able to visit with him one last time over Memorial day weekend. He had clearly deteriorated significantly, and I left him concerned that he would not be with us for much longer.
As so many people have said, Denny was a very special person. He leaves a powerful legacy.
I was blessed to have had him for a friend during a very difficult time in my life. In the summer of 1971, I showed up on Denny’s doorstep in Phoenix. After spending nearly a year in the hospital after being critically wounded in Vietnam, I was wandering around the country dazed and confused, trying to get my life back together. Although I hadn’t seen Denny since high school, he welcomed me as only Denny could, and gave me a place to crash for a few days. I ended up staying in Phoenix, finding a job, and we shared an apartment until I met and married my 2nd wife.
As someone mentioned, he was always organizing a party, a concert outing, a barbeque gathering, a trip to a ballgame, you name it; and he drug me along whether I wanted to go or not. His concern for my welfare, his tenacity and his unconditional friendship was incredible. As we discussed during our last visit, I am not sure that I would have survived that period without it.
Judy, we all need to heed your beautiful tribute and celebrate Denny’s life by striving to live our lives the way that he lived his. If we do, the world will be a better place.
