Jennifer Nelson

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2007
at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE at the age of 16

Jennifer Leann Nelson was born October 15, 1990, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Wesley and Nicole (Ireland) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland. She grew up in Midland as well as her grandparents’ ranch outside of Midland. She received her education in Midland until the 10th grade, when she transferred to Philip. Although she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth, the amount of accomplishments she achieved in her short life were endless. While in Midland, she played 5th and 6th grade basketball, she was a member of the Badlands Gymnastics in Kadoka for over six years, the Midland Tumblers, was a cheerleader for the Midland Vikings Boys Basketball Team and also took piano lessons. Jennifer was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the youth group of Midland, was a junior member of the Midland American Legion Auxiliary, the Bad River Buckaroos 4-H Club, and the Haakon Jackson 4-H Junior Leaders, and a member of the FCCLA.

Midland was always home to Jennifer, and the feelings she felt when coming down the hill to Midland after being in the hospital were overwhelming. When she transferred to Philip at the beginning of the school year, she felt that was her transfer to adulthood. Midland was her childhood home, and now Philip was her adulthood home.

Jen’s greatest joy was babies and little children. She enjoyed spending time with her cousins, and the rest of her family, including her dog "Lucky". She took a great interest in photography, and loved to cook.

Jennifer had a very special team of doctors, nurses and staff in Omaha, as well as in Philip, and their kindness will never be forgotten.

Grateful for having shared her life are her parents Wes and Nicki Nelson of Midland; her brother James Nelson of Midland; her paternal grandparents Olaf and Rose Nelson of Midland; her maternal grandparents Lyndy and Kenny Ireland of Philip; her great-grandfather Shorty Ireland of Kadoka; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins that were very special to her.

Jennifer was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Betty Ireland, Vint and Louisa Williams, Irene and Albert Rittel, and Oliver and Edrie Nelson.

Visitation was held Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Philip High School, and one hour preceding the services at the School on Saturday.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, at the Philip High School with Pastor Paul Bly officiating.

Interment was 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Midland Cemetery.

A memorial is established.

Lyndy & Kenny,
Max and I are so sorry to hear about the passing of your grand-daughter, Jennifer. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. It was just a vacation that turned out to be so much more, we gained true friends. Your family crosses our minds often with fond memories. Jennifer was just a small child and full of life. She is no longer frail and weak but, takes her place standing tall beside God. She will be greatly missed by all.

The Family Of Jennifer Nelson-
I am so sorry for the loss of Jennifer. I am from Wall, SD and saw this news. I never met Jennifer or the folks, but saw her picture and it is evident that she was a happy girl that had high expectations of life. I am sure she touched everyone that she came in contact with. I understand her feelings of popping over "the hill" to home and being overwhelming. It is a gorgeous sight. I know I don't you, her parents, but you must be content with yourselves that you raised such a wonderful daughter and that you got to experience her presence even though short but that she effected your lives and so many more.

You have my deepest sympathy! But know that you are better people because you raised obviously a wonderful daughter that apparently touched so many.

Nikki, Wes, and James,
Thank you so much for the courage and strength you showed all of us every time you were with us. Jenn will never be forgotten by any of the staff that took care of her, nor will we forget your example of showing grace in hard times. I'm so sorry for your loss, and yet glad Jenn is in a place where she doesn't have to hurt anymore and can play with her friends already there. You know they're causing trouble somehow! All of our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't understand why God does what he does, but I do know what a great girl Jennifer was and I can understand why God wanted her on his side. Every challenge he threw at her she passed with flying colors and thats why he knew she would make a beautiful angel to watch over all of you. I will truly miss her.

I am so sorry to here about this I still remember all the rodeos we went to and all the times that we spent together. I cant believe that she's gone. She was such an inspiration to everyone around her. She was really able to light up a room with her smile. I know that she is in a better place and her pain is gone but her spirit will live on. We were so sorry to hear of Jenn's passing. We hope you can find strength knowing that she touched so many people's lives. The courage and strength she showed throughout her illness sets an example for all of the rest of us to live by. She will be truly missed, but knowing that right now she is in heaven running around like she has always wanted to and probably eating a big pizza or some steak and taters without worrying about getting sick makes it a little easier. God has just received a new angel and I bet she makes him smile like she just like she made us smile back here on earth. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Dear Ole & Rose, Lyndy & Kenny,
We were so sorry to hear of the passing of your courageous little granddaughter. She, indeed, was so "very special" to everyone especially her loving family and friends and including loving people who didn't personally know her. What a great gift of life she has given us all!! May God bless you as we share these times of sorrow and may our thoughts and prayers help give you comfort.

Wes, Nikki, and James,
What can we say? It seems likes words cannot come close to explaining how people feel at times like these. I only know that being a parent one of the hardest things I can think of is to have to let one of them go. Jenn couldn't have been placed in a more loving family on this earth and now she is with her heavenly family. Jada asked at dinnertime today to pray for Nikki and Jenn during this time. Jada and Jewel remember when Jenn would come over to preschool when you were teaching them Nikki. She had a way of connecting with little kids and people of all ages. Just know that you and your family have a lot of people praying for strength during this difficult time. God keep you, Jon, Jennifer, Jada, Jewel, Jet, and Jess

Dear family of Jennifer,

So sorry to lean of Jenn's passing. I was only with your family the one time at the ranch 2 years ago, but have felt I knew you. I have kept up with Jenn's long struggle through her Grandma Lyndy. I have admired your faith, courage and determination through these many years. What a testimony she had and it will live on through the lives of all who knew her. Please accept my deepest sympathy. I pray GOD will comfort you and surround you with HIS love and mercy. Love, Grace

I will always remember Jennifer talking about her family. She was always fun to be around, no matter what kind of mood you were in, when you were with her, you always had a smile on your face. I will always remember how in geometry class, she would always ask if she could come over after school, and play with our cat. You all will be in my prayers and thoughts. Love you all!

Dear Wes, Nikki, James, and family,
We saddened very deeply on the news of Jennifers passing. She was a very special and kind hearted young girl. I will never forget all the times I spent with her when I administered her enzymes and snacks to her everyday. We had some good talks and I felt so sorry for her when she couldn't eat the snacks that were given, but how hard she did try to eat them. She was a very determined little girl and I'm sure that carried with her as she grew up. She was a inspiration to us all. I know the sadness that comes with someone you are so close to. Everyones life was touched by just having met her. We are praying for you now and for the days ahead. God Bless you all! You all helped her in so many ways and I know she was so glad to have all of you there for her. I can picture Jenn running around with no pain and able to breath now in heaven. She is loving every minute of it! Take comfort in all of this. It helps.
With deepest sympathies,

Wes, Nicki and James:

As I write this, I am so saddened that Jenn had to leave this earth so early, but she is in heaven now. She has no more pain and is living with the angels. I have been thinking about you constantly since I heard of Jenn's passing. She was such a beautiful girl and she will be missed greatly. I remember being at your house one day, I think it was for a rubber stamp party, and Jenn carrying Kelsey around everywhere! I think Kelsey liked being held by her! When I had to bring her to the senior citizens center with me to scrapbook, Jennifer was there to help look after her. I appreciated it very much. Your family has been in our thoughts and prayers all through this journey. Now the journey has ended and Jenn can rest in peace with no pain. If you ever need to hang out and visit or whatever, know that you can call us anytime. We will see you soon.

We are so sorry to hear of your precious daughter's passing. Like a lot of people have said We didn't get to know Jenn, But from the articles my family has read in the Pioneer Review your daughter had a spark in her eyes that no one well ever be able to fill. Our hearts go out to you in your time of loss. Always remember that God has a plan for us all. Even though Jennifer's was a short one here on earth, I am sure God has an even bigger one for her now. I'll always remember the determination she had during tumbling. Always the first to jump up and get to the top of the pyramid and never afraid of being hit off of it. She has made a great impact on many of our lives whether we had known her personally or not. May God strengthen your hearts and stand next to you in your time of need.

Wes, Nikki, and James,
We'll never forget the times we got to spend with Jennifer. I'm very grateful for having the chance to know her and to take care of her when she was little. My kids keep talking about the special times they got to spend with her. Jamie just reminded me of the time Jenn was a little shy with her, and they went out to the daisy bed by the house and Jamie got her to open up by playing with the daisies. She is among the family gone before and I'm sure there was a great welcome. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Jennifer was very special to all of us at Make-A-Wish. Your family was and is very special to us. We'll never forget her smiles as she played on her playground equipment. We also won't forget the many times we were able to see all of you at the rodeo events. This is the most difficult part of our job. While we would love to be with you on Saturday, we will be granting a wish to another very sick child. Please just know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. If you ever get to Sioux Falls, please stop in and see us. We won't forget Jennifer. Always remember, "tough times don't last, tough people do". God Bless!

We were so sorry to hear the sad news. I kept up with Jenn's story through the internet - reading the article in the Rapid City Journal and the Pioneer Review. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for your family. I didn't really know any of you but Vint was my first cousin so feel like I am a relative to Jenn. It's hard to put in to words what I am feeling for you. Please except my deepest sympathy. Love, Mae

Wes, Nikki and James,
I would like to offer you the thoughts and prayers of my family. The time I spent in Midland really formed me into the person I am today, especially the time that I spent working and learning under your supervision, Wes. Now that I have a little boy of my own, I know that I cannot understand what you are going through. But, I know someone who can. I didn't know Jenn real well, but knowing her parents I bet that Jenn is with the one who understands your pain. The God who created the heavens and the universe sent his son to die for each and every one of us, he understands your pain better than any human being on earth ever could. Jennifer's pain and struggle are finished now, and she will never feel that pain or sorrow again. Jennifer is with Jesus, and you have this hope--that you will be with her again. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body." Phil. 3:20-21. There are so many other things that I suppose could be said, but words escape me. I know that your daughter is safe an secure now, resting in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father, and my prayers will turn to you and the rest of the family. From My parents, brothers, and my family, God bless you.

You guys have been through so much and it's been a long, hard journey but Jenn was more than worth it! She was such a great girl and one of the best friends I'll ever have and I was just so lucky to have her in my life even if it was for just a very short time. I wish so much that I could've known her longer, I will miss sitting at football games with her in the nice warm car talking about boys and gossiping! Those were some of the best times I'll ever have and that's because Jenn was there to make them great. I admire all of you and hope to be as brave and courageous as you some day. And once again I can't believe how lucky I was to have such an angel touch my life like she did. Now that angel is in heaven and shes going to watch over us and keep us all safe. I'm going to miss my Best Friend so much and I will always keep our great memories close to my heart! You'll always be in my thoughts and prayers!

Oh wow.....Where do i start. Jenn was not only one of my BEST friends she was like a sister to me. Every where we went she would tell people we were Siamese twins, i was just bigger because they cut half of her off and put it on me. Jenn was such an amazing person and inspired me a lot. NO matter how much pain she had to go through she kept on going. I never thought that this day would come, we always talked about how our graduation would go and when we were going to get married. I've know Jenn and James for a long time. I can remember countless birthday parties and endless sleepovers. I don't know how Nikki put up with all of us for so long, Jenn and I were ALWAYS getting in trouble for something. But Jenn is in God's hands now and he has a plan. You are all in my prayers and hang in there. I know how if feels to lose someone very close to you. GOD BLESS
~ Mariah Evans Midland, SD (1/16/2007)
Wow - Where do we start? Sometimes our lives take a turn we are not ready for. This is why we must trust in God and know he makes the final decisions. Jennifer was a wonderful person and I am very glad we had the chance to know her and just the type of person she was. Carissa and I were visiting about her "Make-a-Wish" gift and the fun times they had playing on it. She was always willing to help in 4-H when Carissa and Thomas had questions. When I coached tumbling and she was able to participate she loved the trill and she always had a smile on her face, even when she was short of breath or coughing. I just cannot remember any time that she was not smiling. We will miss her dearly. Now or when thing are starting to slow down and you need a friend or neighbor to count on let me know, I will be there for you the best I can. Know that Jennifer is resting in peace now and will never struggle again. Thank God for the life she had and the memories you were blessed with by
her. We will always remember her!!!

May it bring you comfort to know that we are thinking of you at this very sad time. You are not alone today nor will you be tomorrow for warm thoughts and prayers of those who care are with you in your sorrow... Jenn was an amazing young lady with spunk. I enjoyed knowing her and working with her as she explored her endless opportunities of learning through 4-H. She always said she wanted to be President not just the Secretary!! She had an amazing smile and that could melt your heart in a second! She is God's Special Angel now... Smiling down on you as she makes her way through Heaven's gates. May God Comfort you now and keep you strong as you face the days ahead.

Wes, Nikki, James-
There just are no words to express our sorrow over the passing of your beautiful Jen. Our hearts just ache for you. I will always remember the time spent with her when I worked at the school. She won the hearts of all she came in touch with. She fought a long battle and has earned her reward of a special place in Heaven. You know she will always be with you and her smile and sweet personality will make Heaven a brighter place. She could not have been born into a more loving and supportive family, and though you only had her for a short time, because of you, her 16 years were the very best they could be. Please know you are in our prayers.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. What a journey this has been for your family. In my mind, I can just see Aunt Louisa coming down Heaven's sidewalk with her arms wide open, welcoming Jenn to that wonderful place. I hope your Jennifer liked to garden, because that is what I imagine she and Aunt Louisa are doing, now that they are both in perfect health with energy to burn! You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Wes, Nikki and James,
what a family of strength you are. Your community loves you all and we are all here for you during this time of extreme sorrow. We will all miss Jenn's beautiful smile, so strong, and so loving in that little package of an earthly body. She, as an angel, will finally show her true size.

Nikki, Wes and James,
Know that you are truly in our thoughts and prayers. Nikki...you, Karel and myself had many good visits at the Midland Library. Often times we talked of Jennifer. I marveled at your strength and your smile and commented on it. You shared with us your times of tears and worry and commented how it helped to talk about it. From one mom to another I know there is a huge empty place in your heart right now. Fall back on the good memories the good times you shared. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on I am here. James...I remember you giving Jenn rides on the 4-wheeler and the two of you laughing and having a good time. Jenns life on this earth was too short. May it bring comfort knowing she is one of Gods "special" angels, healthy and free to do all the things she was unable to do on this earth. A priest once told the story of the farmers yoke...that it had two holes...one for each oxen to help each other pull the plow. He went on to say how when the burdens of life seem to weigh us down to remember...ours too has two holes...one for us and one for God. May you find comfort in knowing God is there beside you and He will carry you through the tough days ahead. God be with you! Jerry and Sonia Nemec

Nikki and family,
I never have really known Jennifer, but I do know that she is your daughter, Nikki, and I have followed her progress, the benefits, etc. for her. I also recall very much the trials and tribulations that Misty Sharp went through a number of years ago. From everything I hear and read, I know that you had a specific and wonderful daughter. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you during this time. May God guide you during this time.
Sincerely, Jean Holzkamp

From what everyone else has said, and what my mom, Becky, and brother, Andrew (Jennifer's classmate), have said, she was an amazing person. Take comfort in knowing that she has touched so many lives.

Nikki. Wes and James, Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God give you the strength and courage to keep Jen close to your heart and also give you the strength to help each other. I keep remembering that little tyke slowly eating her snacks at the gym and wanting to be working out with the kids. Remember how we solved that one? Everyone took longer breaks. And it worked. The kids remember how excited everyone was when Jen learned a new skill. We're really going to miss her. God Bless and may God grant you peace Kippy, Zane and Skye

Jenn was such a courageous girl and I will treasure all of my memories of her. She fought a tough battle, yet she could always manage a smile. It's hard to lose someone so special. Although she never got the chance to do many of the things a young girl should, heaven has been blessed with an amazing angel. You have all been in my thoughts and prayers and will remain there in the days to come. Jenn may no longer be with us in body, but her loving spirit will never leave us. She touched so many lives and I'm sure she's looking down on you. God bless you all.

No words can explain the sadness we feel with you. May you find peace in knowing that heaven has been blessed with a spunky little angel. She know longer has to fight for every breath of air and can do what she has longed to do, but could not. If there is anything we can do, please let us know. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers. We wish we could be there for the service, but will have to only be there in spirit. Sending hugs your way.

Wes, Nicki and James,
Words escape me as the tears are blurring my vision of the computer screen. James came and sat with us a while at the JC Tourney on Saturday and said Jenn was having a pretty good day on Friday. Cynthia stopped in my office this morning (Tuesday) and told me things weren't going so well. Then the news came this afternoon and I cried all the way home from work. You guys have ALL our prayers. Know that God has wrapped his arms around each of you and that Jenn has no more pain. Can't wait to see you all.

To Jenn's Family, I was sorry to hear the news of Jenn's passing. I was able to keep up on her through my parents and the Pioneer Review. Isn't it great to see all the support our small communities have for a person. Jenn was such a go-getter, as I recall from her growing up while I was in school. She was a determined person which I mostly remember when she was in tumbling. She was a joy to watch grow up. Especially going to prom...I remember bringing Dack down to your house to pick her up...she was kind of nervous I think, but very excited to be going to prom. I was glad I was able to drive them, hopefully I didn't embarrass them more then their parents would have! Jenn and your family will be in my prayers through this difficult time of sorrow.
