Robert L. Long

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, January 11, 2015
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 86

Robert L. Long was born August 23, 1928, in Haakon County, South Dakota, the youngest of five children born to Ivory and Helena (Hinz) Long. As a young boy he lived with his parents on a ranch southeast of Philip. He grew up there until his parents’ bought a farm seven miles north of Kadoka, where he received his education, graduating from Kadoka High School in 1948. After graduation, Bob helped his parents on the ranch.

Robert was united in marriage to Elda V. Freiderick on October 14, 1956, and to this union were born two children; Donald Robert on September 10, 1957, and Donna Marie on May 22, 1960. Bob and Elda made their home on his parents’ ranch and took over the operation after his parents moved into Kadoka. In addition to running the ranch, Bob also worked as a mechanic for Hemmingson Auto in Kadoka. Bob started working for Jackson County in the late 1970’s and continued there until retiring at the age of 80. Bob and Elda moved into Kadoka in 1981.

His wife Elda preceded him in death on November 2, 2008. He continued to make his home at the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka, where he met his second wife, Beth M. Olson. They were united in marriage on September 4, 2011. They made their home in Midland, until Beth’s health forced her into the nursing home, and Bob moved into the Silverleaf Assisted Living Center in Philip. His second wife Beth, preceded him in death on September 13, 2013.

Bob was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Philip. Bob was a very gentle man, good with animals and small children, and enjoyed horses. Music and dancing were two of his favorite enjoyments.

Survivors include one son Donald Long of Rapid City, and Donna McCauley and her husband Mike of Rapid City; four grandchildren Heather (Brandon) Payne, Robert (Tami) McCauley, Amanda and Mallory McCauley, all of Rapid City; four great-granddaughters Lilah and Elley Payne and Claira and Brooke McCauley; two step-children Sharri Pettyjohn and her husband Zane of Kadoka, and Barry Olson and his wife Elaine of Woodstock, Vermont; two step-grandchildren Jennifer (Kevin) McMillin of Kadoka, and Shawn Stinson of Riverton, Wyoming; one step-great-granddaughter Augusta McMillin; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his first wife Elda, and his second wife Beth, Bob was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Leroy, Orville “Tim”, and Alvin Long; one sister Doris Millage; and two nieces.

Visitation was held one hour preceding the services at the church.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.

Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip.
