Susan K. "Susie" Hanson

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, April 10, 1991
at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 85

Susan Katherine Hurst, better known as "Susie" to her family and friends, was born June 10, 1905, to Nicholas and Jenny (Helleckson) Hurst, the first white child born in Presho, South Dakota.

She grew up in the White River area and received her elementary education in that area prior to graduating from Draper High School.

As a young lady she worked as a secretary in the Murdo area and later managed the telphone office in White River.  In the late 1950s she moved to Philip, South Dakota, where she worked as a waitress for Marky Meeks in the Senechal Coffee Shop.

Susie was united in marriage to Hans T. Hanson on August 2, 1959, at Gillette, Wyoming.

They made their home on the Big Stone Ranch (101) near the Cheyenne River in northern Haakon County, north of Philip.

In the fall of 1982, they retired and moved into Philip.  In 1987, because of health reasons, she moved into the Philip Nursing Home where she continued to reside.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Hans T. Hanson, of Philip; two daughters, Kay (Mrs. Ron) Couch of Philip, and Charleen Bryan of Rapid City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Orville Hurst of Pierre, and Willard Hurst of White River; one sister, Opal Andersen of Cheboygan, Michigan; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents; two brother, Nicholas Hurst and Leonard Hurst; and three sisters, Maude Snyder, Mabel Hurst, and Ethel Shafer.
