Brad Stone Obituary

Brad L. Stone was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He lived with his family in Waubay until about age three. The family moved to New Underwood where he attended Kindergarten and 1st grade. Then the family moved to Midland where he spent a couple of years attending Midland School and was a Midland Tumbler. He was the finale for the program doing the flip over the pyramid with Mickey Houston jumping above him at the same time. Brad continued his education in Kadoka and graduated from Kadoka High School.

He attended USD for a year, then decided to sit out and work for a while for the DOT. Returning to college found him at BHSU pursuing a teaching degree. He decided he was tired of borrowing money for college, so he came home and went to work. He worked as a hired man for Scott Patterson followed by working at the H & H for Cindy and Kenny Wilmarth.

Brad was united in marriage to Kristie Byrd on December 28th, 1996. He made the move to work for the county as the Director of Equalization where he worked for 16 years. Three daughters completed the family. Emma in 1999, Anna in 2001, and Andi in 2004. Brad wanted to keep going – at least enough for a basketball team, perhaps 8-10 so there would be a few subs, but that wasn’t in the cards. He then went to work as the head custodian and did maintenance for the Kadoka Area School District in 2013 where he was employed until his death.

Brad loved fishing, camping, playing cards, drinking Busch Light, telling stories (really, really, long stories) and pretty much any sport, but especially basketball. He coached Middle School Basketball, boys and girls, for around 30 years. He loved teaching the fundamentals of basketball, watching basketball and talking basketball with anyone who would listen. He would recount every detail of every game when he would get home. He was an active member of the Kadoka Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years and the Kadoka EMS for about 15 years as an EMT and later as a driver.

He was always involved in youth activities, coaching basketball as well as baseball, helping with the After Prom Party, and organizing and running a pool tournament for a few years. Service to the community and youth were a priority.

He was baptized and became a member of Concordia Lutheran Church just prior to his marriage. He served as a trustee on the Church Council for a few years.

Survivors include his wife Kristie; daughters Emma, Anna and Andi; six siblings: Christine (Drew) Cope of Valparaiso Indiana, Cathy Stone of Kadoka, Cliff Stone of Kadoka, Jody (Sundae) Stone of Hot Springs, Jerome “Zeke” (Carlene) Stone of Watertown, Laurie (Cleve) Prichard of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Brad is preceded in death by his parents Gene and Barb (Hedeen) Stone, sister Peggy Stone, brother Bill Stone, nephew Todd Prichard, sisters-in-law Belva Stone and Jewel Bearheels, in-laws Larry and Deanna Byrd, and brother-in-law Harvey Byrd.

Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the City Auditorium in Kadoka.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 21, at the City Auditorium with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.

Interment will follow at the Kadoka Cemetery.
