Betty Hoar

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, May 9, 2023
at her home in Murdo at the age of 75

Betty Joan (Krueger) Hoar was born February 19th, 1948 in Burke, SD to Leon and Joan (Peppel) Krueger. Betty grew up on the family farm near St. Charles, SD where she attended St. Charles Elementary and Bonesteel High School. Betty was the 2nd of five children.

Betty met Jim in high school in 1963, were high school sweethearts and were united in marriage on May 6th, 1966. Over the next nine years, three children were born; Linda, Lori, and Lance.

Betty’s greatest joy and blessing in life was her family. She especially looked forward to her home filled with family during holidays and special occasions. Betty enjoyed many hobbies such as cooking, baking, canning, gardening, reading, fishing, and playing cards. She had the wonderful gifts of hospitality and generosity while always attending the needs of others before herself.

She held various jobs throughout the years, but Betty’s passion and favorite was her position of High School Librarian which she held from 1989-2013. After her retirement she enjoyed staying in contact with many of her previous students. In her later years, she became the local Avon lady where she enjoyed visiting everywhere she went.

Betty was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo and helped serve on various committees in the Church. Her faith in Jesus was evident by the life she lived and her love for God’s Word. Betty had the heart of a servant and blessed everyone she came in contact with.

In 2019, Betty was diagnosed with lung cancer and defied the odds by going into remission the next four years. During these years, as in her previous years, Betty focused on building relationships with all she came in contact with, she developed a special connection with the nurses who cared for her. In April 2023, she was given the news that she had acute leukemia. Her family was fortunate enough to have spent her last days with her reminiscing and enjoying her final moments before entering eternity with Jesus. Betty passed peacefully surrounded by her family on May 9th, 2023.

Grateful to share in her life is her husband Jim of 57 years, her children Linda (Michael) Glaze, Henderson, CO; Lori (Brett) Nix, Murdo, SD; and Lance (Kristi) Hoar, Gilbert, AZ; her sisters, Connie (Gene) Pistulka, Fairfax, SD; Judy (Shorty) Feddersen, Murdo, SD; her brothers, Jim (Diane) Krueger, Huron, SD; Dan (Sandy) Krueger, Gregory, SD; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Joan, Sister-in law Becky Hour, niece Paula Pistulka, nephews Donnie Krueger and Brian Feddersen.
