Isabelle Sampson

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, September 14, 2025
at the Silverleaf Assisted Living Center in Philip at the age of 97

Isabelle Munger was born on November 16, 1927 to Luther and Belle (Landis) Munger. She grew up on the homestead south of Kadoka and attended grade school at Welles. Goldie Whisler was her favorite teacher and Isabelle enjoyed helping with the other students. She graduated from Kadoka High School in 1945 and went on to get her teaching certificate.

Isabelle taught school for two years at Loyalty School. While teaching she stayed with John and Rose Sampson where she met and fell in love with Vern Sampson. “I saw a picture of him and said that’s the man I want to marry.” Her wish came true on June 28, 1947 at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka. Early in their marriage Isabelle decided to take guitar lessons and Vern gave her the nickname “Hippy” which stuck with her for many years.

After their marriage Isabelle taught school for two more years. They purchased the Stamford Grocery Store and Post Office from Andy Blom which they operated for several years. Vern wanted to ranch and truck so they moved south of Midland, and Isabelle was the bookkeeper for his trucking business. After 59 years of marriage she lost her husband Vern, and to help fill her days she worked as a waitress in Kadoka and Belvidere for several years. Over her lifetime, Isabelle was an active member of the Open Bible Church in Midland and always volunteered when help was needed. She lived near Midland until her health started to fail at which time she moved to the Silverleaf in October of 2024.

Isabelle and Vern were the proud parents of three children, the twins, Sherrie and Steven and youngest son, Randy. Tragically, Steven was killed in a farming accident at the age of nine. Isabelle’s strong faith got her through this very tough time, and she would find comfort in the songs and poems that God would inspire her to write. Sometimes they would even come to her in the middle of the night. Her true passion was serving God and the many songs and poems she wrote praised Him. Her faith stayed strong all her life and she loved sharing her love of God and what she wrote with her friends and family.

Isabelle was a kind and wonderful person who loved planning dinners for holiday meals. She was a member of the Extension Club and was in her element planning and organizing their events. Everything had to be perfect. Family and friends were very important to Isabelle. She never forgot a birthday, and she always put others before her own needs. She loved to embroider, do beaded calendars and crossword puzzles.

Isabelle’s heart is now filled with joy for she is in the arms of our Heavenly Father. I will miss you Mom and love you forever.

Guest Book

I’ve known Isabelle a long time as her mom Belle used to babysit for our family when I was young. Waited tables with Isabelle and kept in touch with phone calls. Just visited with her at the Silverleaf in June. As always was dressed up with her jewelry on😊. Knew Phylis too. My thoughts and prayers are with your families and I am glad to been a part of their lives. Sorry to miss the service but I am busy on Friday

I was so sorry to hear of Isabelle’s passing. Sherri, I know you and your Mother were close and you did such a good job watching over her. I know she will be missed. I'm thinking how happy she will be to see all her loved ones who went on before her. I am keeping you in my prayers.
