JoAnn Schulz

of Brandon, formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, May 4, 2025
at Ava's Hospice House in Sioux Falls at the age of 95

JoAnn Adele Schulz, age 95, was born September 21, 1929, in Canton, Ohio to Chester Grim and Esther (DeWeese) Grim. She was baptized on December 22nd, 1929, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Canton. When JoAnn was 5 years old, the family moved to Cumberland, MD, where she attended grade school. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran in Cumberland on April 18th, 1943, by Pastor Edward Heinz. Her confirmation verse was Luke 11:28, "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it”. In 1944, the family moved to Pennsauken, NJ. She graduated from Merchantville, New Jersey High School in 1948.

Following her graduation, she worked in the accounting department of Campbell's Soup Company in Camden, NJ, for 5 years. She met her future husband, Kenneth Schulz, who was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, at a USO dance. They were united in marriage on February 21, 1953, in Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken. They moved to Philip, SD where she and Kenneth farmed and ranched. This union was blessed with four children: Susan, Karl, Marie, and Sarah. They were members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. In August 1971, she became employed at the First National Bank in Philip, where she continued until retiring in 1991. Following her retirement, JoAnn continued working part time at the bank until 1999.

After Kenneth's death on November 27, 2001, she continued to live on the ranch in Philip. She moved to Brandon, SD in 2011, and joined Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Throughout her life, she acquired many hobbies. She and Kenneth enjoyed polka and square dancing. They belonged to local dance clubs. She was known to sew, knit, crochet, cross-stitch, and quilt, and even made quilts for many of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She studied the genealogy of her family. JoAnn loved to travel, and spent several winters in Alamo, TX, where she met many close friends. She also enjoyed baking, and her community was glad that she would share her talents.

She is survived by her children: Susan (Roger) Hoyme of Tucson, AZ, Karl (Val) Schulz of Philip, SD, Marie (Duane) Rogers of Brandon, SD, and Sarah (Eric) Lewis of Morris, MN; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Guest Book

JoAnn shared her many talents with so many. We enjoyed dances and practiced in their basement while a group was taking lessons. A dear long distance friend.

JoAnn was very sweet and caring. I know my dad, Walter, her nephew, greatly appreciated her texting and calling with him later in his life. It provided him a lot of joy to share information about his family with her and hear how all of his cousins and their families were doing. Rest in peace.

I’ll always cherish the memory of summers grandma as the flower girl at her wedding... it was such a joyful and heartwarming moment that truly captured her wonderful spirit. She brought warmth and happiness to everyone around her. Thinking of you and sending love and comfort during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers for all the family on the loss of your mother. She was always such a lady, and we enjoyed our visits with her. We aren’t able to come to either the viewing or the service, but wanted to share our sympathy with you.
