Wilma Gartner

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Saturday, June 22, 2024
at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 78

Wilma Doris Gartner was born April 27, 1946, in Newberg, Oregon to Willis and Hazel (McElrea) Parr. She attended school in Newberg and graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1965.

Wilma was united in marriage to Raymond Lee “Ray” Gartner on November 12, 1972.

Wilma’s hobbies included reading, sewing, camping, fishing, and taking care of the grandchildren. A few of her greatest joys in life were taking her children to national parks when they were growing up and also fishing and camping at the parks as well.

Survivors include her husband Ray of Philip; three daughters: Cheryl (Todd) Gartner of Box Elder, Mary and former spouse (Mark) Oberlander of St. Peter, Minnesota, and Elizabeth “Beth” (Mike) Boardman of Philip; one son, Christopher Metz of Wall; seven grandchildren: Charlene (Casey) Alziebler, Michelle (Mike) Steele, Amber (Ron) BearStops, KayLee (Mason) Norton, Kennah (Pheonix) Gartner, Lauryn Oberlander, and Leah Oberlander; five great-grandchildren: Rhys, Kyra, Blake, Persephone, and Khaleesi; one sister Linda (Edward) Bearden of Goodyear, Arizona; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Willis Gartner on October 13, 1973, and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Rush Funeral Home in Philip.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the Kadoka Cemetery with Pastor Cindy Bisser officiating. A luncheon will be provided immediately after the graveside service at the Kitchen Café in the Sale Barn in Philip, and all are welcome to attend.
