Mary Ellen Herbaugh went to be with her Lord Monday, February 15, 2016, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Mary Ellen Wellman was born September 10, 1927, on the homeplace 10 miles north of Okaton, the daughter of Glenn and Bessie (Judd) Wellman. She grew up on the home place and attended the Kessler Country School through the sixth grade. The family moved to Okaton where she finished school, graduating with one classmate.
Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Ernest Herbaugh on September 24, 1949, in Valentine, Nebraska. They made their home in Okaton where Ernest worked on the railroad and they raised their six children: Gary, Roger, Keith, Starla, Fred, and Loren. After the kids grew up, she went to work at a motel in Murdo. She later worked at the Kadoka Nursing Home for many years, when her mother was a resident at the home.
Mary Ellen enjoyed playing cards, especially the game 500. Gardening was a big part of her life, and did a lot of canning, especially tomatoes.
Survivors include her five children Roger Herbaugh of Vivian, Keith Herbaugh of Draper, Starla Brown and her husband Bill of Kadoka, Fred Herbaugh of Murdo, and Loren Herbaugh of Vivian; eight grandchildren Tyrel, Clayton, Christi, Heather, Trina, Tiffany, Amanda and Lane; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Ernest of April 3, 1991; a son Gary Herbaugh; and two brothers Charlie and Bud Wellman.
Visitation will be held one hour preceding the services on Saturday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. CST on Saturday, February 20, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, with Rev. Ray Greenseth officiating.
Interment will be at the Murdo Cemetery.
