Elvera Moos

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Saturday, November 2, 2024
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 80

Elvera Reta Harnish was born November 29th, 1943 in Rapid City, SD to John and Velma Harnisch. She grew up north of Quinn with her sister Echo. Elvera graduated from Philip High School in 1961 and attended college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD for one year.

In July of 1961, Elvera met Tyrone Moos while he was working for Delzer Construction building Highway 73 south of Philip. They were married on July 3rd, 1962 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. Over the next three years they moved their mobile home to eight different communities while Tyrone worked construction, spending the winters in Selby, SD.

In the fall of 1964 they made a permanent move to Philip and purchased the Mobil Oil Service Station which they operated for 9 years and the Park Inn Cafe for one year. During this time they also began farming with Elvera’s father.

In 1973 they purchased the Laura Braddock home and farm which was the start of their 60 years of farming. Elvera made her living as a homemaker working alongside Tyrone on the farm. She was always busy helping around the place during these years but always had the coffee on and the table ready for anyone who came to visit.

Elvera was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wall, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip and First Lutheran Church in Philip. She served the church in many ways throughout the years but her favorite was always sharing her love of music with the release time children.

Elvera loved music and frequently shared her gifts with the community through church and Christmas Cantatas. She took great pride in sharing her love of music with family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Elvera always enjoyed spending time shopping with friends and family and could shop for anything but she always found great joy in “antiquing.” Elvera took great pride in her home and loved to decorate. Over the years her family all learned how to hang wallpaper and to repurpose the treasures she would find.

In April of 2022 Tyrone and Elvera moved from the farm to the Silverleaf where they lived together until Elvera moved into the Scotchman Living Center in March of 2023.

Elvera had a deep love for her family and created many special memories for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Tyrone of Philip; two daughters Hallie Albrecht and her husband Mike of Philip, and Heidi Kampfe and her husband Steve of Pierre; one daughter-in-law Georgia Moos of Philip; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one due in March; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elvera was preceded in death by her son Harlan Moos; a great-grandson Noah Kampfe; her parents; her father and mother-in law Albert and Luella Moos; and her sister Echo Rockafellow.

Visitation will be held one hour preceding the services at the church.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Cindy Bisser officiating.

Private family graveside will be held at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established to the First Lutheran Church and the Scotchman Living Center, both of Philip. Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 172 Philip, SD 57567.

I wanted the entire family to know that you are in my prayers as you deal with this loss. It is never easy to see someone you love pass away, but be secure with the knowledge that she is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ now and forever.

Tyrone and family, I have so many great memories over the years with your family and especially with Elvera. She always encouraged me to be the best with my music and helped me prepare many a solo in elementary and junior high. Our families spent so many times together over the years, but the special memories were always around New Year’s Day and of course, whenever the wheat harvest was happening in Philip. I am forever grateful for the impact she had on my life and especially for encouraging me when I was going to sing. May God‘s promise of eternal life in Heaven grant you much peace and comfort today. I can only imagine the joyous reunion in Heaven with Harlan and Echo. I hope she and mom find some time to get together like they used to. Much love to you and the whole entire family.
