Lon M. Lyman was born September 9, 1943, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Lyn and Dorothee (Collins) Lyman. His mother and he lived in Bozeman, Montana for a short time while his father was in the Army during WWII. After his father’s discharge from the Army in 1944, the family moved to his grandfather’s homestead 10 miles north of Okaton. Lon grew up and received his education in Murdo, graduating in 1961. After graduation, Lon attended South Dakota State University, majoring in campus wildlife. Lon then attended Black Hills State University, graduating in 1968.

Lon then taught school at Okaton, Scenic, New Underwood, Philip, and Rapid City, for approximately 10 years. Some of Lon’s best friends today are the kids he taught in school. After his educational years, Lon began his career in agriculture, returning to the ranch in 1990.

Lon met the love of his life while in Murdo, Susan Iversen, and they were married February 19, 2003, in Rapid City. They made their home in the Murdo area all their married life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Susan and the family. At the last Murdo reunion, I had a wonderful visit with Lon as I really appreciated getting the opportunity to visit with him.

Surprise and sadness. That was my response when I read about Lon's passing. During our "growing up" days, he was a distant friend. He was older than me, and he lived in another neighborhood, but his house was across the street from the grade school building, and I was often on the school grounds, so we connected there. I haven't seen him for "a hundred years," but I have a soft place in my heart for him. Sorry to hear of his passing. Hope he had become a believer in Jesus.

Lon was, unabashedly, my favorite. He intimidated me at first, but once a person takes the time to get to know him it was quickly realized Lon was the salt of the Earth and had no time for phoniness. We got along great and it was my honor to work with him. Susie - you are in my thoughts and my heart. ~cori

Lon - one of the best! Always had an opinion - whether your agreed with him or not. Excuses didn't sit well with Lon - if I had to describe him to someone - his motto probably would be Put up or Shut up!. I will miss him!
